EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 14 Northwestern used two second-half goals to edge the No. 25 Golden Bears, 2-0, in a battle between two evenly matched teams Sunday at Lakeside Field in Evanston.
A scoreless first half saw balanced effort on both sides as neither team held a clear advantage on offense. Northwestern held a slight edge in shots, 4-3, while the Bears had the advantage in corners, 3-2.
Natalie Dalton and her Wildcat counterpart Annie Kalfas registered two saves apiece in their respective goals.
Northwestern broke the scoreless tie in the 52nd minute, capitalizing on a corner with Maren Seidel's first goal of the day.
The Wildcats added an insurance goal in the 59th minute when Seidel sent a ball rolling to the right of Dalton, finding the back corner of the cage.
Cal pulled Dalton in the 68th minute to add an 11th field player, and the Bears drew a penalty corner in the waning seconds of the game to up their chances but could not capitalize.
The Bears finished with seven shots to Northwestern's nine, and the Wildcats also led in corners, 6-5, and saves, 4-3.Â
Dalton (0-2) tallied three saves but suffered her second loss in the cage. Cal is now 3-5 this season.
