BERKELEY – Senior
Shinya Kadono scored a goal in his fifth consecutive game and moved into a tie for sixth place on Cal's all-time single-season scoring list with his 10
th goal overall, and the Cal men's soccer team defeated San Diego State 1-0 on Sunday at Edwards Stadium for its first Pac-12 victory of the season.
Kadono, who led the Bears (5-3-2) last year with seven goals, is skyrocketing up the Bears' single-season scoring chart with still almost half the season to play. The school record for most goals in a season is 21, set by Mike Deleray in 1985.
With the game scoreless Sunday in the 60
th minute, freshman
Taylor Davila chipped a soft through ball ahead of Kadono, who beat two Aztec defenders and poked it past San Diego State goalkeeper Cameron Hogg. The Bears outshot the Aztecs 10-5 without allowing a shot on frame.
"The team needs goals and I have my responsibility to score," said Kadono, a member of the 2018 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team. "So far, it's been really nice. One of my goals is to be consistent because last season I wasn't as consistent as I wanted to be. So far, it's going how I want. I need to keep it going."
Redshirt freshman
Alonzo Del Mundo had three shots and Cal got strong play in the midfielder from redshirt freshman
Lucas Churchill, who played a season-high 87 minutes.
"Lucas is very versatile," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "He can play multiple spots and just give you a great day's work, like he did today."
Cal now has a week off before hosting rival Stanford next Sunday at 3 p.m. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
