Bears Clipped In the Desert

Cal Comeback Falls Short In 60-55 Loss To Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – Cal's comeback on the road fell just short, dropping a 60-55 decision to Arizona on Friday night at the McKale Center. The Golden Bears (10-4, 1-2 Pac-12) overcame a 14-point deficit to tie the game with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats (13-2, 3-1 Pac-12) prevailed down the stretch to hand Cal its first road loss of the year.

Arizona redshirt sophomore Aarion McDonald led all scorers with 36 points, going 5-8 from beyond the arc, while Kristine Anigwe had 19 points, 20 rebounds, and seven blocks for Cal in the loss. Anigwe's seven blocked shots tied her career-high, as Anigwe extended her double-double streak to 15 in a row.

Graduate transfer Receé Caldwell added 13 points for the Bears on 5-8 shooting, her third game this season in double-figures. Caldwell connected on three three-pointers against the Wildcats, matching here season-best, and also added six assists.

Cal's offense sputtered in the first half, scoring a season-low 22 points and going 2-12 from the floor in the second quarter. The Bears trailed by 14 late in the second quarter before Caldwell's second three of the game cut the deficit to 11 heading into halftime.

The Bears came out of the locker room executing on both ends of the floor, opening the third quarter on a 14-5 run. Cal held Arizona to just eight points in the third quarter on 3-17 shooting and trailed by five entering the fourth quarter.

Cal steadily chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 53 -53 with 1:08 left to play when Anigwe grabbed an offensive rebound and finished down low. The top rebounder in the nation this season at 14.4 rebounds per game, Anigwe finished with eight offensive boards and 20 total rebounds, her most ever in a Pac-12 game.

Cal outscored Arizona 28-18 in the paint and held a 42-30 advantage overall in rebounding. However, the Bears committed 18 turnovers on the afternoon, compared to just six for the Wildcats.

The Bears will looking to rebound on Sunday, heading to Tempe for a 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT matchup against 19th-ranked Arizona State. The Sun Devils (11-4, 2-2 Pac-12) opened the weekend with a 72-65 loss to No. 6 Stanford. Cal will be looking for its first win at the Wells Fargo Center in four years, dropping its last three road games against Arizona State, all by 10 points or fewer. The Sun Devils have won six of the last seven meetings overall between the teams, with Cal's last win coming via upset in the 2016 Pac-12 Tournament.
