All Four Pro Bears In NFL Wild Card Round Advance
Eight Former Cal Players On Teams In Divisional Round Next Saturday-Sunday
BERKELEY – All four former Cal players on rosters of NFL Wild Card Round teams have advanced to the Divisional Round of the league's playoffs next Saturday-Sunday, Jan. 12-13. Cal has a total of eight former players who finished their collegiate eligibility with the Golden Bears on active rosters of the eight Divisional Round teams.
L.P. Ladouceur was the first former Cal player in the Wild Card Round advance after Dallas held off Seattle for a 24-22 home victory over Seattle on Saturday night. Ladouceur participated in 11 plays as the Cowboys' long snapper.
Three more Pro Bears – Keenan Allen,
Brandon Mebane and Richard Rodgers – were on teams that moved on Sunday. Allen had a game-high-tying four catches for 37 yards in the Los Angeles Chargers' 23-17 win over Baltimore while Mebane is on the team's 53-man playoff roster but according to the Chargers missed the game for reasons not injury. Rodgers played in Philadelphia's 16-15 win at Chicago but did not record any statistics other than participation.
The four Bears that were on winning Wild Card Round teams join four other in the Divisional Round that play for teams who round earned Wild Card Round byes in C.J. Anderson and Jared Goff (Los Angeles Rams),
Cameron Jordan (New Orleans), and
Mitchell Schwartz (Kansas City).
Schwartz will be the first of the eight Pro Bears to play in a Divisional Round contest when top AFC seed Kansas City hosts No. 6 Indianapolis (3:35 pm CT, NBC). The Colts are one of only two remaining playoff teams to not have a former Cal player on its active roster and the only without any Cal affiliates as two former Cal players – Stephen Anderson (practice squad) and
Brian Schwenke (injured reserve) – are affiliated with the other in New England.
Anderson and Goff also get their playoffs started Saturday evening as the NFC's second-seeded Rams host Ladouceur and the No. 4 Cowboys. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:15 pm PT (FOX).
On Sunday, the AFC's No. 5 seeded Chargers with Allen and Mebane will travel to No. 2 New England (1:05 pm ET, CBS), while Rodgers and the No. 6 Eagles visit Jordan and the NFC's top-seed New Orleans at 3:40 pm CT (FOX) to wrap up the Divisional Round.
Others former Cal players associated with remaining NFL playoff teams in addition to Anderson and Schwenke include Raymond Davison (Kansas City, practice squad) and Daniel Lasco (New Orleans, physically unable to perform list). Mychal Kendricks was on injured reserve for the Seattle squad that was eliminated by Dallas.
A total of 19 former Cal players ended the 2018 NFL regular season on active rosters while 33 were affiliated with NFL teams including six on injured reserve, one on a physically unable to perform list, three on practice squads and four on coaching staffs.
Cal began the 2018 NFL season ranked fourth in the Pac-12 and tied for 21st nationally in number of former players on active rosters.
