HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - Cal men's water polo will have its say when Team USA attempts to qualify for the 2019 FINA World Championships as USA Water Polo announced Monday that Luca Cupido and Johnny Hooper will be part of the 13-man roster that participates in a four-team tournament in Brazil later this month.

Team USA will take on Argentina, Brazil and Canada from Jan. 22-26 in Sao Paulo with the top two teams earning the final two spots at the 2019 FINA World Championships in South Korea. Group play begins Jan. 22 against Argentina, continues Jan. 23 against Brazil and concludes Jan. 24 against Canada. The semifinal round is set for Jan. 25 and the championship match will take place Jan. 26. For game times and live video links, visit USAWaterPolo.org.

Cupido and Hooper were both part of the United States squad that took part in an exhibition series against Italy in December and both Golden Bears have established themselves as key members of Team USA over that past few years. Cupido represented the United States at the 2016 Rio Olympics while Hooper has become of the team's top scorers in international competition since then. Both wrapped up legendary Cal careers with Cupido earning the 2017-18 Cutino Award as the nation's top male player and Hooper earning a spot as one of three finalists for the 2018-19 award.

Two more Golden Bears will also be part of the Team USA contingent as current Cal assistant coach Jeff Tyrrell and former Cal standout Gavin Arroyo will also be part of the staff that make the trip to Brazil. Both Tyrrell and Arroyo are also familiar faces within the U.S. team as both have served on international coaching staffs for Team USA over the past few years and both were part of the coaching staff at the FINA World Cup in Germany in September.
