STANFORD, Calif. – Home away from home.
No. 16 California volleyball turned Stanford's home court into Bear Territory with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-19 sweep of Arizona State on Friday at Maples Pavilion.
The Bears (14-1, 4-1 Pac-12) were forced to travel and play a home match on The Farm due to the power outages on campus in Berkeley, including Haas Pavilion.
Sophomore
Lauren Forte led the Bears by setting a new career-high with 14 kills on .591 hitting and junior
Mima Mirkovic recorded her sixth double-double of the season by tallying 12 kills and 11 digs.
"My vision on the court and connection with the setters has been really good the last few matches, we've been working on that a lot in practice," Forte said. "I think having to come over here and play today really brought us closer and we rallied around that. There was some adversity, but we also knew we had to rely on our team to bring the energy and bring the fight. This is going to help us going down the stretch because we won't always be in front of fans screaming for Cal."
Junior setter
Isabel Potter notched 40 assists with two service aces and 11 digs, while junior
Preslie Anderson added 10 kills and three service aces. The Sun Devils (10-6, 2-3 Pac-12) were led by 13 kills from Jada Burse.
California jumped out in front early in the first, building a 7-3 lead after Potter recorded a kill with a quick tap over the net. ASU responded to tie the set at 10, but the Bears went on a run and reeled off seven of eight points to build a six-point lead and close the set.
Arizona State took a 7-6 advantage in the second set, and was in front 15-13 at the media timeout before Cal started another big run. The Bears scored eight straight points to take a 22-18 lead and put away the Sun Devils from there.
The Bears didn't let off the gas in the third, taking an early 3-1 lead on a kill by Mirkovic. ASU pulled even twice in the set, but never took a lead as Cal closed out the match for a third consecutive conference sweep.
Cal out-hit ASU .356-.287, had 51 kills compared to 44 for the Devils and tallied seven service aces while Arizona State notched just one.Â
The 14-1 start to the season is the Bears' best since going 15-0 to begin the 2010 campaign on the way to a 30-4 record and national runner-up finish. Â
"I think we need to keep being perpetually dissatisfied with our performance keep the underdog mentality," Forte said. "I think there is so much more potential for this team and it's exciting to keep reaching that. We can look each game at what we've done well, then store it and put it in the box and worry about what's next. It's always what's next."
