BERKELEY - Â Friday nights are for the Bears! For the second time this season, the Cal women's soccer team knocked off a Top-10 opponent, beating No. 4 USC, 3-0, on Friday night at Edwards Stadium to kick off Cal's homecoming weekend. With the win, the Golden Bears (10-3-2, 2-2-2 Pac-12) snapped the Trojans (11-2-1, 4-2-0 Pac-12) four-game winning streak, handing USC its most lopsided loss of the year.
Luca Deza,
Paige Metayer, and
Emma Westin all scored for the Bears in the win, with assists from
Abi Kim,
Mia Corbin, and Deza. Freshman goalkeeper
Angelina Anderson made six saves in the shutout victory as Cal became the first team to shutout the Trojans this season.
Friday's win, along with a 2-1 victory over No. 7 UCLA on September 27, gives Cal its first sweep of its Los Angeles Pac-12 rivals since the 1996 season. The Golden Bears have now secured their eighth 10-win season in the last nine years, and 11
th overall in 13 seasons under head coach
Neil McGuire.
"Let's credit Coach McAlpine, his staff, and his team," said McGuire. "USC is a tremendous team and obviously a storied program. We are very, very pleased to get a great win at home in front of our fans. I think our players deserve the success for how hard they've worked and it's exciting to see. I think half of being successful in sport is belief. We've been building our belief with good early wins during the non-conference and then a good win to start conference as well. This just solidifies that we can compete with any team, and we're looking forward to the rest of the season."
Looking to snap a four-game winless streak, the Bears proved up to the task from the opening whistle on Friday. Cal's defense – which has been tops in the Pac-12 this season – withstood some early chances by the Trojans high-octane offense. Anderson tipped away a dipping chance in the fourth minute and came up with another key save in the 14
th minute, coming off her line to deny USC's Tara McKeown after she slipped in behind the Bears' backline.
Cal's offense started to find its flow after the quarter-hour and finally broke through in the 27
th minute with the goal by Deza. Kim started the sequence on the right wing, beating her defenders and driving beautiful ball to Deza at the top of the six-yard box. Deza was there for the one-time finish with her right foot, tucking it inside the far post. It was the fifth-goal of the season for Deza – already a career single-season best – while Kim tallied her fifth assist of the year, tied for the team lead.
The Trojans nearly drew level in the 34
th minute off a header by McKeown, but her look bounced off the crossbar and Anderson was there to secure the rebound.
Leading 1-0 at the half, Cal doubled its lead in the 55
th minute as Metayer tallied her third goal of the year. Kim's speed and craftiness earned Cal a corner, and Corbin, a senior captain for the Bears, played a dangerous ball into the mix. USC goalkeeper Kaylie Collins got a hand to it, but the deflection fell right to the feet of Metayer, who buried the rebound into the back of the net. A key figure in the Bears' midfield, Metayer's three goals are new career-high while also tallied her fifth assist of the year.
The Trojans pushed for an equalizer and had a promising chance by McKeown in the 74
th minute, as she turned the corner and got in behind the Golden Bear defense. Yet once again, Anderson was there for the save, coming up with a diving effort to her left. Anderson finished the game with six saves – one shy of her career-high – while Anna Smith and Collins made one save apiece for the Trojans.
USC held a 16-10 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corners kicks.
Westin put the game out of reach in the 82
nd minute, as the Swedish international tallied her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Deza set up the play after she earned a free-kick right at the end of the 18-yard-box. Deza put a well-struck ball on frame, forcing Collins into a diving stop. However, the rebound found its way to Westin, who pounced on it for her first goal of the 2019 Pac-12 campaign. Â
The Bears return to the road next weekend, heading to the Rockies for games at Utah (Thursday, Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. PT) and Colorado (Sunday, Oct. 27 at 12 p.m. PT). With a 4-0-2 record, Cal is unbeaten on the road this season and one of eight teams left in Division I women's soccer that are unbeaten on the road in 2019.
