Cal-Oregon State Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Justin Wilcox
On the play of the offensive line:
"It was tough to get going running the ball. You have to run the ball better. And we took nine sacks. Some of that is protection. Some of that is getting rid of the football at the quarterback position. We have a lot of work to do there."

On the play of the defense:
"Defensively, we had some good stops throughout the game. We had three awful drives across the board – d-line, linebackers and DBs. It starts with coaching. It starts with me. You have to give Oregon State credit. They have a good offense. We need to acknowledge that, but we played really poor on three drives. That cost us, big time."

On QB Spencer Brasch:
"It's a tough position to be in. First time he's taken a snap. We'll keep working with him."

California Players
Evan Weaver, ILB
On the three OSU scoring drives:

"Yeah, three touchdowns doesn't really play very well. I mean whenever they score it's not a good thing, so we have to look back in the film room and figure it out and get everything fixed but we beat ourselves. They are a good team, but man, on defense we didn't play our best."

On the defensive struggles:
"Nothing right now. I have to look at the tape. We are going to look at the tape and figure it out."

On the mood of the team and the mindset heading into Utah:
"We have to come ready to work on Monday. It's kind of repetitive now, but that's it, come ready to work. Come ready to get better."

Zeandae Johnson, DE
On the three OSU scoring drives:

"It was just the little things. We have to work on the fine details. Coach said it was razor thin margins and we have to fix those. So we are going to come in on Monday and get it fixed."

Camryn Bynum, CB
On the successful defensive drives:

"We just started getting up to our details. The first half we were letting small things slip and going for more yards than we should have and letting them march down the field. Second half, we did a lot better but we still gave up points. "

Jordan Duncan, WR
On the offense's overall performance:

"We made some good strides, but obviously it wasn't enough to get the job done. But it was good to see the potential of the next level we could have taken it to. We just didn't execute when we needed to. They made more plays than us, it's simple. We have to come back Monday and figure out those plays so we can execute for the next game."

Oregon State Head Coach Jonathan Smith
General Comments:
"Obviously, I'm very proud of our guys. Going in, we talked about how this was going to be a four-quarter game, and it played out exactly like that. I thought our guys started fast. We got the lead early, defensively, helping us out to do that. But, the second half, we had those swings of momentum. Overall, for our defense to come out and finish that way was huge. We talked about putting the previous game to rest, and I thought our guys did it, learned from it and had a great week of work. Their energy, attention to detail played out today. That's a good football team over there. Those guys have won a bunch of close games. They have a really good on defense, and I have a ton of respect for that staff. I'm pleased to come out on top today."

Playing Well On The Road:
"It is what it is. I do think our guys like the fact of coming in on our own with the 74 we're traveling with. Maybe an added focus, I don't know. The last two road games have been great."

Able To Execute in the Backfield:
"Defensively, we came in with the mindset that we wanted to attack. These guys bought into the plan that we were going into attack mode. We brought in some added pressure, more than we've been doing, and our guys executed it."

Thoughts On Comeback:
"We talked about knowing this game was going to go back and forth. We know they have some players over who are capable of making big time plays. We went dry a little bit in the fourth quarter, but it wasn't out of reach. I felt comfortable our guys would respond, and they did."

Thoughts On This Win:
"You like them all. I like the fact we responded from the previous week. I like the fact we played well defensively and got just enough offensively to win the game. Ranking them [the wins], we'll take anything we can get."

Oregon State Players
DE Jordan Whitley
On the win:
"Today was a great day. Practice was lights out. We got the taste of (last week's) loss out and we showed up."

On getting into the Cal backfield frequently:
"Preparation throughout the week. Coaches told us to be physical, be aggressive. We tied in a lot of stuff from the Utah loss and stayed to our details and worked our technique. We knew we had to do and we did it."

OLB Hamilcar Rashed
On putting pressure on the Cal QB:
"It was just paying attention to details. The coaches got us ready. We're supposed to be disruptive in the backfield. We just listened to the coach and did what he taught us to do."

On OSU playing better on the road this year:
"I don't think it's a secret. We played lights out defense today, but we've got more to improve and we have to better on the road and at home too."

On bouncing back in the 4th quarter:
"I think that people are going to doubt us no matter what so we have to come out every day in practice and work our tail off. Coach emphasizes that we need to get to the ball. We just need to get better every week. It's a different team this year."

QB Jake Luton
On the win:
"It was fun. It's a battle. It's the kind of game you want to be a part of – to come down to the wire and have to make a play when you need it most and we did that."

On Cal's defense putting early pressure on:
"We knew they were a good defense and get pressure. We knew they were going to cover well because that's what they've done all year. We knew it was going to happen. They put pressure on me a couple times, but we kept plugging away."

On the game-winning drive:
"Do your job, that's it. Just do your job. Everybody likes to get emotional with hootin' and hollerin' and that's not going to win you games. That's not going to execute for you. You've got to be able to take a deep breath and focus on what your job is. We're coached really well, we work on it all week. All the situationals tied into, it doesn't matter. You just go out and execute and you do what you're supposed to do and we did that."

RB Artavis Pierce
On key 20-yard run on 3rd and 10 late in the game:
"It was a small crease and it was good blocking by the line. I just saw a small crease and was able to get through."
