STANFORD, Calif. - The Cal women's basketball team opened its exhibition slate with a 95-77 win over Beijing Normal University on Sunday at Maples Pavilion. The game was moved to Maples Pavilion due to a power outage in Berkeley.

After a slow first quarter, the Golden Bears found their footing and finished the game with five different players in double-figures. Freshman point guard Leilani McIntosh led the way for the Bears with 19 points, while classmate Evelien Lutje Schipholt added 18 points and 11 rebounds in her first action in blue and gold. Fellow rookie Jazlen Green chipped in 11 points and connected on two of her five attempts from beyond the arc. Senior Jaelyn Brown finished with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two steals, while junior forward Alaysia Styles had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the victory.

"There are certainly things I want us to improve on, but overall it's the energy and the effort we're looking for right now and I think we got that," said head coach Charmin Smith. "We have a really young team and a team in which no one other than Jaelyn Brown has really been a starter before. We're still figuring out roles and what's best for the team. Having the two exhibition games will be good for us, playing in front of fans and having refs calling it just like they would in a real game. I think these two games will be very beneficial."

After getting outscored 21-17 in the first quarter, Cal found its rhythm in the second quarter and went on a 12-2 run midway through the quarter to take an eight-point lead into the lockeroom. The Bears' freshmen impressed in the opening half, with McIntosh and Lutje Schipholt combing for 24 of Cal's 45 points in the opening half. A Phoenix, Arizona native, McIntosh also led the Bears with five steals and four assists while Lutje Schipholt – who has represented the Netherlands on the youth international level – went six-of-seven from the floor.

Cal added to its advantage after the break, thanks to 10 second-half points from Brown – who also finished the day with seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Styles, who earned the start, went a perfect three-for-three from the floor in the second half, en route to a 12-point performance.

In addition to providing valuable real-game experience, Sunday's exhibition took extra meaning as it was a chance for redshirt senior Chen Yue to play against former high school and childhood teammates on the Beijing Normal squad. Yue, who finished with five rebounds and four points, is the first Chinese woman to play Division I basketball.

"[Chen] thanked her teammates in the locker room after the game," Smith said. "I think it was a really special day and I'm really glad we were able to do this for her. She's given so much of herself to this program, so it was great to get to do this for her."

The Bears will be back in action next Sunday, hosting Vanguard at 2 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion in Cal's final tune-up before officially opening the season on the road at Harvard on November 8. The exhibition against the Lions is free and open to all.

In addition, the Open Practice and Tip-Off Event originally scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26, has been moved to Saturday, Nov. 2. Doors will open for the Open Practice at 12:00 noon, with a welcome from head coach Charmin Smith beginning at 12:15 p.m.. Immediately following open practice, fans will have a chance to meet and mingle with the Cal student-athletes and staff out on Spieker Plaza for the annual Tip-Off Event. The carnival-style celebration is free and open to the public, with fun, food and festivities for all. Spend time with the Golden Bears while taking advantage of the games, music and Cal spirit station.
