California closes out the regular season in Northern California with the second meeting against UC Davis on Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 3 p.m. at Aggie Field. The Golden Bears have won four of their last six games this season, including a 3-2 overtime win in the Berkeley meeting against the Aggies. Â Â
Â
Cal (7-9, 1-2) is looking to not only sweep the season series against UC Davis, but also lock up the second seed in the America East West Division for next week's conference tournament. UC Davis has to either beat the Bears by two goals, or beat Cal and Stanford in order to claim the second seed.Â
Bears Split Final Home Weekend
• The final home weekend at Underhill featured two dramatic contests. The first saw Cal beat UC Davis, 3-2, in overtime for the annual Pack The Stands game and Senior Night.
Megan Rodgers scored the gamewinner in overtime after
Megan Connors made a critical defensive save late in the fourth quarter to keep the game tied. Connors also scored the first goal of the night. On Oct. 22, a second-half comeback just came up shy against No. 16 Stanford, as the Cardinal won, 3-2. Cal tallied two second-half goals after Stanford jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first half, but the Bears couldn't get the game-tying score.Â
Bears All-Time Vs. UC Davis
• Cal is 25-5-1 all-time vs. UC Davis, and the Bears are currently enjoying a five-game winning streak over the Aggies. The most-recent meeting was a 3-2 overtime win over the Aggies in Berkeley on Oct. 18.Â
Rodgers Leads the Bears
•
Megan Rodgers is Cal's leading scorer in 2019 with 26 points (11 goals, four assists). Rodgers has been clutch, as well, picking up the gamewinner in Cal's 3-2 overtime win vs. UC Davis. She also sparked the comeback effort in Cal's 3-2 loss against Stanford. In her last four games, Rodgers has recorded 11 points - including two goals and an assist vs Sacred Heart - and she has posted points in each of the last four contests. In the Cal record book, Rodgers currently ranks fourth in career goals (41) and sixth in career points (84). Also in the Cal record book,
Femke Delissen sits tied for ninth in career assists (21).Â
Cal's Scoring Margin Soars
• A key reason why Cal has won four of its last six games has been the large disparity in the scoring margin. The Bears have outscored their last six opponents, 24-10, including an 8-1 win over Central Michigan and a 6-0 shutout victory over Sacred Heart. The shutout win was Cal's first in 2019 after recording three last season.
Top-20 Offense
• Cal ranks in the top 20 in the nation in numerous offensive categories - assists (T-15th, 2.13), points (16th, 7.50), goals (T-18th, 2.69) and scoring (19th, 2.64). Individually,
Megan Rodgers ranks tied for 24th in goals and tied for 25th in points in the nation, while
Katrina Carter is not far behind, tied for 28th in goals and tied for 39th in points.Â
KC Gets AE Play Of The Week
•
Katrina Carter posted the most-impressive goal last week during Cal's 3-2 overtime win against UC Davis. At the outset of the third quarter,
Gabi Jimenez stole the ball away from an Aggie, drove downfield, found Carter on the baseline, and the senior standout whipped a shot in the top corner of the cage to give the lead back to the Bears. The impressive goal was tabbed the America East Conference No. 1 Play Of The Week.Â
Competitive Schedule
• Cal's most-recent game against No. 16 Stanford marked its ninth ranked foe out of 16 games this year, based off the NFHCA's current Top-25 poll. Three of those games against ranked teams took place in Berkeley, starting with a 2-1 loss to No. 7 Michigan on Sept. 8 and a 4-3 double overtime loss against No. 14 Syracuse with the second meeting against the Cardinal the third. Â
Godfrid Headed To Cal Hall Of Fame
• Valentina Godfrid (2003-06), a first-team All-American who is the program's all-time leading scorer, has been elected into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame, part of the 34th class of inductees that will be enshrined the weekend of Nov. 8-9. Godfrid was a three-time NorPac Conference Player of the Year, as well as the league's Offensive Player of the Year her junior season. She led Cal to four consecutive conference titles and to three NCAA Tournament berths. Information on tickets to the HOF banquet can be found at bigcsociety.org.
Next Up
• Cal has the weekend off in preparation for next week's 2019 America East Conference Tournament from the home of the No. 1 seed in the East. Â
Bears Tabbed Second In AE West
• America East coaches predicted a second-place finish in the West Division for the Bears, according to the league's preseason poll. It marked the Golden Bears' best standing in the preseason poll in four years. Now a three-team division in the West, Stanford is the favorite to win the West once again, while Albany was picked to win the East. The Cardinal sits atop the West Division with four points and two first-place votes, followed by the Bears in second with three points and one first-place vote. UC Davis rounds out the division in third. In 2018, Cal finished 2-4 in conference play with both wins coming against the Aggies.
