Cal Continues Winning Ways With 3-0 Victory Over Arizona

BERKELEY -  The Cal women's soccer team continued its strong run of form with another impressive result on Thursday afternoon, blanking visiting Arizona, 3-0. With Thursday's win, the Golden Bears (12-3-3, 4-2-3 Pac-12) extended their unbeaten streak to six in a row and picked up their first win over the Wildcats (10-5-1, 4-4-1 Pac-12) since 2013. Denae Antoine and Abi Kim scored for the Bears in the win, while Cal's pressure also created an Arizona own goal. Defensively, Cal pitched its 10th shutout of the season, as Angelina Anderson recorded a season-high 10 saves.

"I want to give credit to [Arizona head coach Tony Amato] and his staff for preparing their team the in the way they did," said Bears head coach Neil McGuire. "Arizona is a very talented program and they presented some challenges. They outshot us and I thought we had to defend very well. I'm proud of the fact we were able to score some goals on the counter attack.

Looking to snap a five-game winless streak against the Wildcats, Cal withstood a flurry of early chances from the Wildcats before capitalizing off a set piece in the 21st minute. Senior Mia Corbin served a corner into the area that drew challenges from both teams. The ball dropped to an Arizona defender but Antoine was waiting and pounced on the touch, picking off the ball and curling it inside the post for what would prove to be the game winner. It was Antoine's third goal of the season and first career goal in Pac-12 play.  A  redshirt sophomore from Chino, California, Antoine tallied goals in back-to-back games to open the year.

The Wildcats looked primed to equalize in the 34th minute when Hannah Clifford blasted a strike low and towards the near post, however Anderson came up with a brilliant diving save to her left, denying the visitors and also preventing a corner. A three-time Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honoree, Anderson finished the day with 10 saves – three more than her previous career-high. Anderson's 10 saves are the most by any Cal goalkeeper since 2017, when All-American Emily Boyd had 14 saves at Stanford, and are tied for the second-most saves by any Pac-12 goalkeeper in a game this season.

Today also marked the ninth solo shutout of the season for Anderson, matching the program's freshman record set by Noreen Paris in 1985. Anderson, who has represented the United States at both the Under-17 and Under-20 Women's World Cup, is now tied for sixth on Cal's single-season shutout list.  The Golden Bears have 10 total shutouts as a team on the year, the most in the Pac-12.

Leading 1-0 at the half, Cal quickly added to its advantage in the opening minutes of the second half as Kim tallied her second goal of the year. After a deflection sent a lofted ball back towards the Arizona goal, Kim's speed proved too much for the Wildcats' defense. The senior from Vashon, Washington, won the footrace against two defenders and calmly tucked her shot past Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey. It was the first Pac-12 goal of the year for Kim, who is tied for the team lead in assists this season with six.

Cal's intensity and organization led to yet another goal just 10 minutes later, as the Bears' high pressure put the Arizona defense running towards its own goal. With Kim closing in from behind, the Arizona defender went to put the ball to safety, but her touch sent it into the back of her own net.

The Golden Bear defense remained organized and held off several promising buildups by the Wildcats' attack, which entered the day averaging 2.27 goals per game on the year. Arizona held a 19-7 overall advantage in shots and a 7-5 edge on the day in cornerkicks. Despite the opportunities, Cal's defensive corps proved up to the task and handed the Wildcats their largest defeat of the 2019 Pac-12 season.

Unbeaten in their last six matches, McGuire has been impressed with the Bears' cohesion and mentality this season.

"I think the most impressive thing is how together the team is," said McGuire, now in his 13th season in Berkeley. "They are clearly very motivated to do well and whether it be the players on the field or the players on the bench, they're all together in this. That's very exciting to see."

The Bears will be back in action in Berkeley on Sunday for their final home match of the regular season, hosting Arizona State at 12 p.m. PT.

Prior to Sunday's match against the Sun Devils, the Bears will recognize the eight members of this year's graduating class: Maggie Bell, Mia Corbin, Daisy Cleverley, Jordyn Elliott, Kayla Fong, Abi Kim, Avery Lakeman, and Olivia Sekany. During their time in Berkeley, this group has amassed 42 wins and earned two berths to the NCAA Tournament. Sunday's pregame recognition will begin at approximately 11:45 a.m. PT prior to the noon kickoff.
