BERKELEY -  Sixty minutes of regulation was not enough to determine a winner on Friday, as California and 14th-ranked Syracuse played a thriller at Underhill Field.  In the end, it was the visiting Orange (8-2, 1-1 ACC) who prevailed in double overtime, as Charlotte DeVries scored her third goal of the game less than two minutes into the second period of overtime. The Golden Bears (3-7, 0-1 America East) forced overtime after redshirt senior Katrina Carter tied the game midway through the fourth quarter, finishing off an assist from Megan Rodgers.
Playing its first home game in nearly a month, the Golden Bears got off to a fast start, with Rodgers opening the scoring just 28 second into the game. It was Rodgers' fourth goal of the season while junior midfielder/forward Maddie Cleat picked up her third assist of the year on the play.
Senior midfielder Lindsay Mathison doubled Cal's lead just minutes later, putting Cal up 2-0 within the first five minutes of action. Syracuse cut into the deficit in the waning seconds of the first half with DeVries' first goal of the afternoon.
"Overall, it was a really solid game," said Cal head coach Shellie Onstead. "I think we started off on a high because we were really well prepared and hyped up to be home. We wanted to take advantage of that home field advantage. It's always good to get on the board that fast, and it helps create momentum. As I would expect of a team of [Syracuse's] quality, they were able to kind of even things out as the game went along."
Trailing 2-1 at the half, Syracuse responded with two unanswered goals in the third quarter, with Sarah Luby and DeVries both finding the back of the net.Â
With less than nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Carter came up with a crucial goal for the Bears, finishing off a feed from Rodgers. It was the third goal in four games for Carter while Rodgers tallied her third assist of the year.
"The fact that we tied it that late, it's becoming a hallmark and that's a really good sign," Onstead said. "We don't give up. We got our feet back under us and played a really good fourth quarter, even under fatigue. Overtime becomes a game of guts and I thought we played it really well. Sometimes shots like that happen. We'll learn from this, but I'm really proud of how we fought and now we're focused on what's next."
The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Central Michigan (2-9, 0-3 MAC) at 3 p.m. PT at Underhill Field.
