Anderson Named Pac-12 Goalkeeper, Freshman Of The Year

Anderson and Smith Headline First Team, Westin and Deza Add All-Pac-12 Honors

SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference announced its 2019 yearly honors on Wednesday, and four members of the Cal women's soccer team were recognized for their performance this season, headlined by freshman Angelina Anderson, who was voted bot the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year by the conference head coaches. Anderson and junior center back Emily Smith earned First Team All-Conference honors while juniors Emma Westin and Luca Deza were both Second Team All-Pac-12 Selections. Anderson also earned a spot on the Pac-12 All-Freshman team for her performance this season.

"We could not be more happy to see our players rewarded for their performance this season and for the impact the have had on our team success," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "Angelina, Emily, Luca, and Emma have all worked tirelessly on their craft and have been committed to our collective effort. It's exciting to see them recognized in a conference with so many talented teams and individuals."

The first freshman in conference history to be voted the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year, Anderson has put together a stellar first season in Berkeley. The 6'0" Danville product leads the conference and ranks 25th in the nation with a 0.849 save percentage, including a 0.857 mark in conference play. A four-time Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honoree, Anderson made a total of 66 saves during the 11-game conference slate, the most by any goalkeeper in the Pac-12 this season. Anderson made double-digit saves twice during conference play, including a 13-save effort against No. 2 Stanford and 10 saves in a 3-0 shutout victory over Arizona. Anderson ranks second in the Pac-12 and 33rd nationally with a 0.70 goals against average on the year and has nine solo shutouts this season, tied for the most by a freshman goalkeeper in Cal women's soccer history. Anderson's nine clean sheets this season rank sixth overall on the program's all-time single-season shutout leaderboard and are the most by any freshman in Division I soccer this season.

Also the first goalkeeper to be voted the conference Freshman of the Year, Anderson is the second player in program history to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors. She joins forward Ifeoma Onumonu, who capture conference Freshman of the Year honors in 2012. The starting goalkeeper for the United States at the 2018 Under-17 FIFA Women's World Cup, Anderson is the second Golden Bear to be named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year, joining Emily Boyd – the program's all-time shutout leader – who took home the honors in 2017. For her efforts this season, Anderson also earned First Team All-Conference honors - the only freshman to do so - and was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.

Joining Anderson as a First Team All-Conference Selection, Smith has been a dominant presence on the Bears' backline this season. The junior co-captain from Los Gatos has started every match this season and has led Cal's backline to 10 shutouts this season. The first player in conference history to be named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week three times in a single season, Smith has helped lead the Bears' to an overall goals against average of 0.68, the second-best mark in the conference and 27th overall in Division I women's soccer. This is the second year earning All-Conference honors for Smith, who was named to the Pac-12 Third Team and Pac-12 All-Freshman Team in 2017. A standout in the classroom as well, Smith was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for the second consecutive season.

Deza, a junior midfielder from Belmont, California, was named to the Pac-12 Second Team after also collecting All-Freshman honors in 2017. A key cog in Cal's midfield, Deza is second on the team in scoring this season, with five goals on the year, and also ranks second on the squad with 13 total points. Deza has played in every match in which she has been available this season, making 15 starts. The Bay area native provided pivotal goals in Pac-12 play this season, scoring the opening goal in Cal's 2-1 road win over No. 7 UCLA and also tallying a goal and an assist in the Bears' 3-0 upset over No. 4 USC. Deza was voted the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after her performance against the Trojans.

One of the top goal scorers in the Pac-12 this season, Westin has earned a spot on the Pac-12 Second Team after a standout junior campaign. The Swedish youth international is tied for fourth in the conference in scoring this season with 11 goals and leads Cal in overall scoring (11 goals) and points (24 points – 11 goals, 2 assists) this season. Adept at playing both up top and in the midfield, Westin is just the fourth Cal player in the last 10 seasons to score 11 or more goals in a single season, joining Arielle Ship (2015 & 2016), Ifeoma Onumonu (2012), and Alex Morgan (2010). Westin opened the 2019 season with seven goals in her first seven matches, while also coming up with critical goals in conference play. Westin scored four goals in Cal's final six games of the regular season, helping the Bears to a 4-1-1 record over that stretch. Another top performer in the classroom, Westin – who is majoring in business administration – also earned Academic All-District First Team honors, one of eight Golden Bears to do so this season.

Cal will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Bay Area rival Santa Clara in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. PT at Stevens Stadium. The Golden Bears will be making the program's 26th trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament and their 15th in the last 16 seasons. Cal and Santa Clara met earlier this season in Berkeley, a 2-1 win for the Golden Bears behind goals from Westin and freshman Natalie Hueston.
