California Head Coach Justin Wilcox
On Evan Tattersall's status:
"He is in the process of being discharged from the hospital, which is good news. It's been positive news as we got into the locker room. Very scary. Anytime something like that happens, there's concern for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, but we have got some positive news just in the last 10-15 minutes.
Â
On USC's receiving corps:
"I've never seen a receiving corps like that in this conference, not in 20 years. Our guys wanted to compete against them. I love that about them. But you have to give them credit. The matchups are as tough as it's been. I've seen great receivers in this league, but not a collection like that."
Â
On rebounding against Stanford:
"We have to own this. All of us. It's disappointing that we didn't perform better. We knew we had to perform well against a team with that type of talent. We have to regroup on Monday. I know that's exactly what we will do."
Â
On DeShawn Collins' performance:
"I thought he had some nice runs in there. He has some good quickness and speed, and I think that showed up. DeShawn has flashed at times throughout this fall. It was nice to get him some carries. You can see his speed, and I think that showed up on a couple different runs."
California Players
Evan Weaver, LB
On what he felt when he saw Evan Tattersall went down:
"It's hard seeing somebody that we train with and we love, and especially as an inside linebacker, it hurts. He's my roommate so I know that he is going to be good though, I talked to a few people, he should be fine, I am actually going to go visit him tonight. It's definitely hard and I feel like we responded well that next drive, for some reason we just couldn't keep the momentum going."
Â
On how USC's receiving core's production affected their play:
"It's tough. We just got beat today. They played better than we did and we need to put all of our focus into next week. We have a really big game, Stanford, and we have not been very good against Stanford the last, I think nine years, so it would be nice to go win that game. But that's not going to happen without a lot of hard work and everybody showing up everyday to work and work and work and work and go get that sixth win."
Â
Kuony Deng, LB
On USC's receiving core:
"We knew they were a dynamic group coming into this week and they delivered. We just try to focus on handling what we have to handled, but, yeah, they stepped up and delivered tonight."
Â
On what it was like going up against a quarterback like Kedon Slovis:
"He did a good job throwing the deep ball. Probably in the first half, maybe the first three quarters I thought we did a good job on first and second down, but they have some explosive plays on thirds downs and we have to play three downs."
Â
On what he will remember most about playing next to Evan Weaver:
"He is a special football player and he is a special person. He's one of my good friends and I think it's been a really good experience being able to play next to somebody who is able to play the game with so much passion, prepares the right way, and loves and looks out for his teammates."
Â
DeShawn Collins, RB
On his performance tonight:
"I am just trying to make the best of my opportunities and help the team win. It felt really good, to get out there on the field with the guys and makes some plays."
Â
On his touchdown run:
"First off, my o-line blocked it up perfect, I was able to get on the outside and I was 1-on-1 with the safety. In our scheme, that's my job, I have to make one man miss and I just did my job."
Â
USC Head Coach Clay Helton
Opening Statement:
"This was a good win for our football team; another good road, Pac-12 win. The kids had a tremendous week of preparation: I thought they brought the right energy and the right attitude today and I thought they made a statement for their team and what they're trying to do down the stretch. This was a team win and there were big plays made by a lot of people. Defensively, I was nervous coming into the game: Cal did a wonderful job against Washington State the week before which really set the tone. Offensively, I couldn't be more proud of how we operated with four touchdown passes…I think [Cal's] defense had only given up nine total the entire year. I'm proud of our kids and how they operated."
Â
It was Kedon Slovis' third 400-yard game in the last four weeks. What is he showing you here in the second half of the season?
"My favorite number is zero…zero interceptions. [Cal] has a really good defense and I think
Justin Wilcox is one of the better defensive coaches in the country. I credit the offensive line…they did come after us and [USC] held up. Also credit the wideouts: they did an elite job when they got in one-on-one situations, making big plays for the kid. When you have four touchdowns and zero interceptions, that's a hell of a day."
Â
Specifically as a thrower, is Kedon the best that you've had while you've been [at USC]?
"I'll tell you the one thing he's doing a really nice job of: he's giving his kids a chance to make plays. You're not seeing a lot of overthrows and I think that's the mark of a good quarterback: giving your kids an opportunity to make the plays for you. And his attitude: that's the other thing that stands out to me. He is always positive, always energetic, always poised, and takes command of the offense. He doesn't look flustered at any point in time. In this game, I think the separation was the drive right before the half. We had talked about how important ending the half and beginning the half was going to be. It was the last thing we had talked about in our team meeting because we had lost that last year [against Cal]: we had a turnover that happened right before halftime and then we came out flat in the third quarter. That cost us a loss against this team last year. We discussed this as a team and they took it to heart. To go down and get that touchdown and then come right out in the second half and double up with another touchdown: that was the separation that we needed.
Â
Does Drake Jackson remind you of anyone?
"I'll tell you he's a unique body because he's a 225-pound man that's 6-foot-5 and his catch radius is unbelievable. He has terrific hands, and we've seen him, for that tall of a man, be able to go down and catch the ball, and go up and catch the ball. His catch radius is just amazing. Here's a kid where about game five it started clicking for him and he's really come on down the stretch. I'm proud of the kid.
USC Players
Michael Pittman Jr., WR
On if QB Kedon Slovis' performance surprises him:
"No, he's showed up and has been the same guy week in and week out. He's getting better and he's showing us that he's an elite college quarterback."
Â
On if he was aware that he was close to 1,000 receiving yards:
"I knew that I was close before (the game)…I don't know where I'm at now. That's a big deal and I'm thankful that I had that opportunity."
Â
On what happened in a third-quarter play where he collided with a referee:
"I think that's the play where I ran into the ref. It was just unfortunate that it happened on third down, it happens. We just have to keep moving forward. I walked off mad at the ref, but it wasn't his fault."
Â
On WR Drake London's emergence:
"I thought Drake (London) has been big time. I actually talked to him after the Washington game when he didn't make that tough catch, and I challenged him. He has come out and played great, especially for being so young. He has a lot of time left here and I'm just looking for him to do great things."
Â
On playing his last game at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum next week:
"I haven't really thought about it. It's just happening so fast and I'm so blessed to be a part of this team and part of this brotherhood. I can't see it ending. I don't really want to think about it yet."
Â
Talanoa Hufanga, S
On USC's defensive adjustments after Cal's touchdown drive in the first quarter:
"We just had to focus on the run game. We just had to adjust. We had to lock in and that's what we did heading into the second offensive series."
Â
On the difference between Cal QBs Chase Garbers and Devon Modster:
"We knew both (quarterbacks) were capable of running. We knew both were threats to get out of the pocket and continue plays. We just tried to collapse the pocket and do our part so that we could get the ball back into the offense's hands to make plays."
