Cal Takes Care Of Business

Bears Power Past North Carolina Central In Cal Classic Opener

BERKELEY -  The Cal women's basketball team took care of business in the opening game of the 2019 Cal Classic, topping North Carolina Central 90-69 on Friday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Bears (4-2, 0-0 Pac-12) advance to tomorrow's Cal Classic Championship game, where they will face Long Beach State (2-4, 0-0 Big West) at 3:15 p.m. PT. North Carolina Central (1-4, 0-0 MEAC) will take on Penn State (3-4, 0-0 Big Ten) in the consolation game at 1 p.m. PT, after Beach topped the Lady Lions, 64-56, in the second game of the Cal Classic. With the win today, Cal extended its win streak to four in a row and improves to 3-0 at Haas Pavilion this season.

A season-high five players scored in double-figures for the Golden Bears, led by 20 points from Jaelyn Brown, the reigning espnW National Player of the Week and Pac-12 Player of the Week. Redshirt senior Sara Anastasieska added 15 points and dished out eight assists in the win, a new career best and the most by any Cal player this season. Alaysia Styles (15 points), CJ West (14 points) and Jazlen Green (11 points) also reached double-figures in the win, as Cal poured in a season-high 90 points.

Four players scored in double-figures for North Carolina Central, led by 18 points and six rebounds from Paulina Afriyie. The Eagles are led by head coach Trisha Stafford-Odom, who was an All-American player for the Golden Bears and was inducted in the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013.

The Bears finished Friday's with a season-high 27 assists, but also committed a season-worst 20 turnovers in the win over the Eagles, an area in which head coach Charmin Smith hopes to improve upon in Saturday's championship game,

"We're happy to get the win today, but not happy with how we played collectively," Smith said. "We need to be better in how we take care of the ball and in our decision making. There are definitely some things we need to clean up and do better to have a chance to win a championship in our tournament tomorrow. We're excited to get back out there and make those improvements."

After a slow start in the opening minutes on Friday, Cal came alive midway through the quarter, taking control with a 19-2 run. Anastasieska went a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the opening quarter, which saw the Bears shoot 60 percent (3-5) from beyond the arc. The Bears shot a season-high 50 percent (5-10) from three on the day and 64.3 percent (36-56) overall from the floor, the team's best field goal percentage in any game in the last two seasons.

After scoring 15 points in the second quarter of Cal's upset win over No. 20 Arkansas last Sunday, Brown carried that momentum into Friday's tournament opener. The senior wen a perfect 4-for-4 from the floor in the second quarter against North Carolina Central, pouring in 11 of her game-high 20 points. Brown, who earned both conference and national recognition for her efforts against the Razorbacks, leads the Bears in scoring this season and is averaging 22.7 points per game over her last three outings.

Leading 51-37 at the half, Cal maintained its advantage throughout the second half. West was dominant down low over the final 20 minutes, going 4-for-5 from the floor in the second half and finishing with 12 points and six rebounds on the day. Cal outscored North Carolina Central, 58-30, in the paint and had a 40-2 advantage in fast break points.

Styles, a junior forward from San Diego, also had an efficient afternoon, going 7-for-10 from the floor and finishing with 15 points, her third game this season in double-figures.

Green, a freshman guard from Upland, California, went 4-for-7 from the floor and finished with a career-high 11 points. With Green's performance against the Eagles, all four freshman on Cal's roster have now scored in double-figures at least once this season.

The Bears head to Saturday's championship game looking to extend their winning streak to five in a row and take home their 22nd Cal Classic title.
