Draper, Hoffmann Win Nationals Opener
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – Cal's
Ben Draper and
Bjorn Hoffmann upset the country's 13th-ranked doubles team in their doubles opener at the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships on Wednesday to advance to Thursday's round of 16.
Playing at The Tennis Club at Newport Beach Country Club, the Golden Bears defeated Notre Dame's Richard Ciamarra and Tristan McCormick, 4-6, 6-3, 10-7, in the round of 32. The Cal duo next faces Ohio State's eighth-seeded Robert Cash and John McNally.
In the singles main draw, Cal's 75th-ranked
Yuta Kikuchi fell to Tulane's 36th-ranked Ewan Moore, 6-4, 7-6(7), in the round of 64. Kikuchi moves to the consolation bracket and faces Tulsa's Kody Pearson on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the round of 32.
Fall nationals conclude on Sunday.
