Bears Fall On The Farm

Stanford Powers Past Cal In Regular Season Finale

STANFORD, Calif. -  The Cal women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday night, falling to Stanford, 4-0, in the final match of the regular season. The Cardinal (18-1-0, 11-0-0 Pac-12) completed their perfect Pac-12 campaign and scored a pair of goals in each half to hand the Golden Bears (13-4-3, 5-3-3 Pac-12) their first road loss of the season.

"Tonight was a difficult game against a highly talented Stanford team, and a great reminder of what it takes to compete at the highest level," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "We are proud of the players and look forward now to the NCAA selection on Monday."

Cal goalkeeper Angelina Anderson made a career-high 13 saves on the day, finishing one shy of tying the Bears' single-season saves record. However, it was not enough to tame Stanford's high-octane attack, which leads the nation in nearly every offensive statistical category.

The regular season finale at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium saw Stanford get on the board in the second minute, as Naomi Girma finished off a free kick from Catarina Macario. The Cardinal doubled their lead in the 13th minute, as senior Carly Malatskey scored with a well-timed strike that tucked inside the near post.

The Bears struggled to establish rhythm in the opening half and were outshot, 16-0, in the opening frame.

Trailing 2-0 at the break Cal was able to create more chances in the second half, and nearly got on the board in the 60th minute when sophomore midfielder Paige Metayer elevated over Stanford goalkeeper Katie Meyer and got off a header that seemed destined for goal. However, the ball was cleared by the Stanford defense before it could cross the goal line and put Cal on the board.

Stanford received second half goals from Sophia Smith (55th minute) and Sam Tran (74th minute) to secure the victory at home.

Anderson came up with eight of her career-high saves in the second-half, including a sprawling point-blank save on Macario in the  68th minute, as the nation's leading scorer got in on goal one-vs-one. A freshman and four-time Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honoree this season, Anderson now has 79 saves on the season, the sixth-most in a single-season in Cal women's soccer history. The rookie continues to lead the Pac-12 in save percentage and ranks second in the conference with a 0.70 goals against average.

With Friday's result, Cal closes out the regular season with a record of 13-4-3 – tied for the program's most wins in a season in the last five years. The Golden Bears amassed a record of 5-3-3 in Pac-12 play and finished fifth in the conference standings, one spot better than their placement in the Pac-12 Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Bears now await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday, where they will find out their postseason fate. The 2019 Women's NCAA Soccer Championship selection show will be held at 1:30 p.m. PT on Monday on NCAA.com. Ranked 20th in the latest RPI and with marquee wins this season over USC, UCLA, Santa Clara, and Arizona, Cal looks primed to return to the NCAA Tournament for the 15th time in the last 16 years. The Golden Bears have made 25 trips previously to the NCAA Tournament, the second-most by any school in the conference. Cal's most recent tournament appearance came in 2017, when the Bears hosted Bay Area rival Santa Clara in the opening round.
