Cal's five All-Region honorees are the program's most in a single season since 1986, and this marks the second time in the last three seasons that Cal has had multiple players earn First Team All-Region recognition.
"To be recognized by coaches around the country for the quality of your performance is a real honor," said Cal head coach
Neil McGuire, "and one that is richly deserved for each of our recipients."
The first player in conference history to be named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Year and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in the same season, Anderson was the only freshman to earn First Team All-Pacific honors this season and one of only eight freshmen in the nation to earn First Team All-Region recognition. A First Team All-Pac-12 honoree and three-time Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week, Anderson led the conference and ranked 22
nd in the nation with a 0.851 save percentage. The Danville, California native made a total of 86 saves on the season, the second-most in a single season in Cal women's soccer history. Anderson also etched her in place in the record books with nine shutouts on the season, tying Noreen Paris' 1985 record for the most clean sheets ever by a Golden Bear freshman. The starting goalkeeper for the United States at the 2018 Under-17 FIFA Women's World Cup, Anderson closed the season with a 0.71 goal against average, good for third in the conference and 30
th-overall in the nation. She had two games this season with double-digit saves, including a 13-save performance against Stanford and 10 saves in a 3-0 shutout victory over Arizona.
Joining Anderson on the First Team is Smith, a team captain and stalwart on the Bears' backline. A defender from Los Gatos, California, this is the second All-Region honor for Smith, who collected Third Team All-Region honors as a freshman in 2017. Smith helped anchor a Golden Bear defense that ranked among the best in the both the conference and the nation, allowing just 15 goals in 20 games and finishing the season with a 0.692 goals against average. A First Team All-Pac-12 selection this season, Smith became the first player in conference history to be named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week three times in a single season. Smith helped lead the Bears to 10 total shutouts on the season, including a six-game shutout streak to open the year. A standout in the classroom as well, Smith was also voted to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team for the second consecutive season.
Westin earned Second Team All-Region honors after leading the Golden Bear attack this season. A member of Sweden's Under-23 women's national team, Westin tallied a career-high 11 goals, ranking among the conference scoring leaders this season and more than doubling her goal total from the previous two seasons. Adept at playing both up top and in the midfield, Westin became just the fourth Cal player in the last 10 seasons to score 11 or more goals in a single season, joiningÂ
Arielle Ship (2015 & 2016),Â
Ifeoma Onumonu (2012), and Alex Morgan (2010). Cal's overall leader with 24 points this season (11 goals, 2 assists), Westin opened the 2019 season with seven goals in her first seven matches, while also coming up with critical goals in conference play. Westin scored four goals in Cal's final six games of the regular season, helping the Bears to a 4-1-1 record over that stretch and earned Second Team All-Pac-12 honors at the conclusion of the regular season. Another top performer in the classroom, Westin – who is majoring in business administration – also earned Academic All-District First Team honors, one of eight Golden Bears to do so this season.
A fellow All-Pac-12 Second Team selection this season, Deza collects her first career All-Region honors with a spot on the Third Team. Second on the team in both scoring (5 goals) and points this season (13 points), Deza played a key role in the Golden Bears' midfield and helped Cal produce a total of 32 goals this season, the program's most since 2016. Deza opened the season with a brace in the Bears' win over Weber State and also came up with pivotal goals in Pac-12 play, scoring the opening goal in Cal's 2-1 road win over No. 7 UCLA and also tallying a goal and an assist in the Bears' 3-0 upset over No. 4 USC. A two-time TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honorable mention, Deza was voted the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after her performance against the Trojans.
Kim, a senior standout from Vashon, Washington, collects Third Team All-Region honors for the second consecutive year. After leading the Golden Bears in scoring last season, Kim embraced the role of provider this season, tying for the team lead with six assists on the year. Kim's six assists were a career-best and came at pivotal moments, assisting the game-winning goals in Cal's upsets over both No. 4 USC and No. 7 UCLA. A team captain for the Bears this season, Kim scored the game-winning goal in Cal's victory over Montana and also found the back of the net in Cal's 3-0 victory over Arizona. An integral part of the Bears' attack, Kim was one of four players to start all 21 games this season and finishes her Cal career with 18 goals and 10 assists in 80 matches.
The Cal contingent helped lead the Bears to a successful 2019 season, which saw the Bears return to the NCAA Tournament and finish fifth overall in the Pac-12. Cal finished the season with an overall record of 13-5-3, including a 5-3-3 mark in conference play.
