Bears Beat Lopes In Non-Conference Finale

Balanced Effort Leads Cal To 72-53 Win Over Grand Canyon

BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team closed the non-campaign in victorious fashion, beating Grand Canyon 72-53 on Sunday night at Haas Pavilion. Four different players scored in double-figures for the Golden Bears (8-3, 0-0 Pac-12), who improved to 7-1 at home on the season. The win snapped a three-game winning streak for the Lopes (5-6, 0-0 WAC), and gave Cal its 10th consecutive home win against an unranked opponent.

Junior forward Alaysia Styles had a career-high 18 points to lead the Bears, while senior center CJ West picked up her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jazlen Green also had a career night, pouring in 15 points in 26 minutes off the bench. Senior Jaelyn Brown rounded out the Cal contingent with 16 points, her fourth consecutive game scoring in double-figures and eighth such outing in the last nine games.

Jada Holland and Da'jah Daniel led Grand Canyon with 14 points apiece.

"We talked about trying to get some momentum heading into the new year and heading into Pac-12 play, and I think we did that," said Cal first-year head coach Charmin Smith. "I think our players are really listening and trying to the best of their ability to do what we're asking them to do. To be 8-3 at the end of non-conference play, I don't think it's something a lot of people expected. But those of us in the locker room, we feel really good about it and we look forward to moving ahead to the toughest conference play in the country."

The Golden Bears led wire-to-wire in the win and were disruptive on the defensive end, forcing the Antelopes into 19 turnovers, which the Bears turned into 18 points off of turnovers. Cal ended the night with 14 steals, its most in any game in the last three seasons. Green and fellow freshman Evelien Lutje Schipholt had four steals each to lead the defensive effort.

Looking to close the non-conference slate with a win, Cal  jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the Lopes, with Styles and Brown pacing the Golden Bear offense in the early stages of the game. The duo combined for 15 of Cal's 19 points in the opening quarter, going a combined 4-8 from the floor in the first quarter and 6-6 from the foul line.

As a team, Cal connected on its first 11 attempts from the charity stripe and connected on a season-high 22 free throw attempts on the night (22-of-26).

Leading 19-13 after the first quarter, Grand Canyon cut Cal's lead to just two points early in the second quarter. However, the Bears went on a 15-5 run to close the first half and extend their lead to 12 heading into the locker room. Styles, who scored 11 of her career-high 18 points in the opening half, capped off the run by knocking down a mid-range jumper with three seconds left to play in the half.

A San Diego native, Styles has started all 11 games this season for the Bears and is second on the team in scoring, averaging a career-high 10.9 points per game. Sunday's performance against GCU was her sixth game this season scoring in double-figures, after just three such games in her first two seasons in Berkeley combined.

The Bears steadily added to their advantage after halftime and outscored the Lopes 22-14 in the second quarter. Cal led by as many as 22 points on the night, taking its largest lead of the game late in the second half when Lutje Schipholt knocked down a pair of free throws.

Green, a freshman from Upland, Calif., led the Bears' offensive effort in the second half, scoring 11 of her career-high 15 points in the second half, during which she went 3-for-5 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the foul line. Green, who has now scored in double-figures four times this season, had a well-rounded night with 15 points, four steals, three rebounds, two blocks, and two assists.

As a team, the Bears dished out 13 assists and held a 39-33 advantage over GCU on the glass.

Cal now turns its sights to conference play, opening the Pac-12 campaign on Friday. The Bears host Washington (9-3, 1-0 Pac-12) at 7 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion. Cal swept the Huskies in both meetings last season and has won five straight against Washington, a streak that dates back to the 2017-18 season.  Washington went 8-3 during the non-conference campaign, and opened Pac-12 play with a 65-56 win at Washington State.
