Trenton Julian, 200 Free Relay Quartet Earn Victories at Minnesota Invitational

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Trenton Julian swam the nation's fastest 400 IM time of the season as California wrapped up its third day of competition at the Minnesota Invitational at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Friday.
 
The Cal quartet of Pawel Sendyk, Ryan Hoffer, Bryce Mefford and Michael Jensen also combined to submit the nation's fastest 200 free relay time (1:16.01), as they closed the day with the Bears' second victory. Cal sits in second place with 529.5 points heading into Saturday's final events and trails just Texas (816 points). Full results from Friday's events can be found here.
 
Julian won Cal's lone individual event on Friday, as he touched the wall first in 3:40.05 seconds and bested Texas' Brandon Vines by .04 seconds. The junior also recorded the fastest prelim time on Friday morning (3:41.84) before besting that mark by 1.79 seconds later in the final.
 
In the 100 breast, Reece Whitley placed as the runner-up with a 51.50 finish. Whitley, who placed sixth in the event's prelim with a time of 52.29, shaved 0.70 seconds in the final to take second place.
 
Hoffer and Sendyk placed third and fifth in the 100 fly with times of 45.46 and 46.02, respectively. Meanwhile, fellow juniors Daniel Carr (45.82) and Mefford (46.44) took fourth and fifth in the 100 back final.
 
NEXT TIME
The fourth day of the Minnesota Invitational will feature the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay events. Prelims will start at 8 a.m. (PT) and finals will take place at 4 p.m. (PT).
