BERKELEY - The Cal women's basketball team kept its perfect home record in tact with a 73-62 victory over Boston University on Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. With the win, the Golden Bears (6-2, 0-0 Pac-12) extend their overall winning streak to six in a row, and handed the Terriers (3-4, 0-0 Patriot) their third consecutive loss.
Four players scored in double-figures for the Bears, who have now won seven in a row at home, a streak that dates back to the end of the 2018-19 season. Cal's current seven-game home winning streak it the program's longest since going 7-0 at Haas Pavilion to open the 2016-17 season. Junior forward
Alaysia Styles recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and a season-high 10 rebounds in the win, going 5-for-10 from the floor. Senior
Jaelyn Brown also added 11 points, while
Jazlen Green (10 points) and
CJ West (10 points) finished in double-figures as well for the Bears.
Boston University's Sydney Johnson led all scorers with 19 points while Katie Nelson added 14 points and nine rebounds for the visitors.
Both teams got off to a slow start on Saturday, combining for just eight points through the first five minute of game action. Cal's offense came alive late in the quarter, taking an 11-8 lead after the 10 minutes of action.
Cal carried that momentum into the second quarter, opening the frame on an 8-0 run. The Bears took their largest lead of the game midway through the quarter, as West finished on the fastbreak off an assist from redshirt senior
Sara Anastasieska. Cal dished out 15 assists on the afternoon while committing a season-low seven turnovers.
West powered Cal's paint presence in the first half, going 3-for-4 from the floor. The Bears outscored the Terriers in the paint, 24-8, in the first half and 40-24 overall on the day.
While West got the Bears going inside, Green made her presence felt off the bench, connecting on her first two attempts from beyond the arc and finishing the game 3-for-6 from three-point range. Green also added two steals and two rebounds while finishing while 10 points for her third consecutive game scoring in double-figures.
Cal led by 13 at the half, but had to withstand a strong second-half performance by the visitors from Boston. The Terriers went on a 13-2 run midway through the third quarter and drew within four points after a three-pointer by Nelson with 3:15 remaining in the quarter. However, Green and fellow freshman
Evelien Lutje Schipholt helped put the Bears back in the driver's seat, scoring Cal's final seven points of the quarter to give Cal a nine-point lead heading into the fourth.
Styles, who was named to the Cal Classic All-Tournament team last weekend, proved pivotal in the fourth quarter, scoring six of her 11 points in the final 10 minutes of action. The San Diego product has now scored in double-figures in each of her last three games, and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to help the Bears secure the win.
Cal outrebounded Boston University, 42-33, on the day, with an 18-7 edge on the offensive glass. The Bears upped the defensive pressure as well and scored 22 points off of 10 Terrier turnovers.
