LAFAYETTE, La.– The Golden Bears have not made it easy on opposing defenses during opening weekend at the Ragin' Cajuns Classic in Lafayette, La., so far.
Â
With its dual-threat offense, California has tested their opponents with small ball and long shots all weekend.
Â
Despite drawing the lone run from Cal in three games, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was the latest victim of the Bears' multidimensional offense. Cal closed the doubleheader day with a 4-1 victory to remain undefeated.
Â
Senior
Lindsay Rood led the offensive charge again scoring two runs and three stolen bases, including stealing home for the second time today. She pilfered the plate to get Cal's first run of the day in its win over Incarnate Word Sunday morning.
Â
Rood drew the walk to lead off in the bottom of the first and made her way to third on a single from freshman
Amani Bradley who later brought Rood home on an RBI single to give Cal a 3-0 lead.
"Roody again was amazing on the base pass," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "She is a game changer. Roody rarely makes a mistake in the base running department."
Â
Bradley and sophomore
Mikayla Coelho led with two hits each. Coelho brought Bradley in on a single up the middle after the freshman stole second, undoubtedly taking a page out of Rood's base-running book.
Â
Coelho also blasted one over the centerfield wall to round out scoring for the day and notch Cal's sixth homer of the tournament.
Â
Senior ace
Kamalani Dung got her first win of the year coming in to relieve senior
Kourtney Shaw to close out the fourth inning. Dung blazed in six strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.
Cal closes out its first tournament with a doubleheader against host-team and 15th ranked Louisiana.
Cal 7, UIW 0
In her collegiate debut inside the circle, freshman pitcher
Alexandra Perez impressed as she threw a no-hitter through the opening three innings, ultimately giving up three hits, to lead California to a 7-0 victory over Incarnate Word on Sunday morning at the Ragin' Cajuns Classic.
Â
Perez finished with four strikeouts in an efficient complete game effort, throwing just 87 pitches, while doubling as Cal's designated player.
Â
The newcomer was backed by great offense once again led by
Lindsay Rood and
Destiny Blueford, both scoring a pair of runs. Blueford tallied her second home run, in as many days, to finish with two hits, while both connected on RBI triples to bring home
Makena Smith and
Jordan Fines.
Â
Rood showcased her base running ability after she lead off the game with a single and then stole second and third during
Amani Bradley's at-bat.
Mikayla Coelho stepped into the box with Rood still on third and drew a strike that allowed Rood to pilfer the plate and give Cal a 1-0 lead.
Â
Karlee Sparacino, who celebrated her 20th birthday Sunday, also found the plate as the Bears (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12) demonstrated their small ball abilities. The sophomore infielder singled through the right side and advanced on a sac bunt from Smith. Sparacino made it to third on an errant throw at first and continued home for a 5-0 lead.
Â
Ninemire's Notes
"Alex Perez really held her own as a freshman pitcher for us in the first game of the day and I think Shawty (
Kourtney Shaw) did great in the innings she gave us before Kama came in to play relief. It's good when you have the ability to do that. We left some runs out there again, so we have to get that in check moving forward."
