Cal Overcome by No. 20 OSU After Costly Error
CLEARWATER, Fla. – California was unable to extend its one-run lead and its early defensive showing crumbled after a fielding error led to three two-out runs as the Golden Bears were overcome by No. 20/17 Oklahoma State 4-1 on Saturday afternoon at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.
Â
Cal (4-4) kept OSU scoreless through three innings, allowing just one hit in that stretch, as
Zoe Conley fanned seven batters in 3.2 innings pitched.
Â
Unfortunately, fatigue set in for the Bears as the programs battled it out in the bottom of the fourth and Cal began to have trouble concluding the frame. The Cowgirls gained quick momentum on a leadoff homer to tie things at 1-1, but Cal defense responded with a pair of ground outs.
Â
OSU did not let up and put one in play up the middle and the Bears erred on the play to allow a walked runner to score the go-ahead run with another two coming across the plate before the inning finished.
Cal brought in senior co-ace
Kamalani Dung to take over the circle for Conley (1-3). The Waianae, Hawai'i native, kept the Cowgirls from adding anymore scores to the board behind four strikeouts. She gave up one hit and two walks in 2.1 innings.
Â
Cal closes the day against Notre Dame at 4 p.m. (PT). The game will also be streamed on ESPN 3.
