LAS VEGAS - For the second straight game, the California women's lacrosse team scored three early goals to jump out to an early lead against San Diego State Sunday afternoon from Las Vegas, but the Golden Bears fell to the Aztecs, 13-9.
Cal (0-4) boasted four different scorers led by three points from
Eliza Christman (two goals, one assist).
Caroline Corzel and
Kirsten Swanson each scored twice, as well, Corzel took 11 shots and Christman finished with nine. Combined, they took 20 of the Bears' 31 shots.
Defensively,
Jenny Wilkens made four saves in the first 10 minutes of the contest and ended the day with 10. It marked her 20th career double-digit save performance - second of 2019 - and her 38th career game recording at least eight saves.
In the first half, the Bears took an early 3-1 lead before the Aztecs battled back after calling a timeout. The Aztecs tied the score on three separate occasions before the squads went into the halftime break tied at five.
In the second half, the Aztecs outscored the Bears, 8-4. SDSU took the lead for good with back-to-back goals in the first minutes after the break. Swanson scored her second goal of the game to cut the deficit down to one, and later completed her hat trick at the 13:14 mark to make the score, 9-7, SDSU. The Aztecs scored the next three goals to maintain control of the game and clinch the victory.
Kendall Swenson led the Bears with four caused turnovers. In draws, Christman,
Nikki Zaccaro,
Marisa Kuberra and
Marina Smith each collected three, and
Lizabanks Campagna totaled three ground balls to lead the Bears. Campagna also tallied an assist.
Cal returns home to face UC Davis on Friday at 5 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium.
