Cal Offense Quiet Against Minnesota
CLEARWATER, Fla. – Kamalani Dung and the Golden Bears defense delivered a solid effort to keep Minneosta scoreless in two innings, including two three-up, three-down halves.
Â
In 5.0 innings from the senior ace, Dung (2-2) fanned seven batters and gave up just one walk and three hits.
Â
Unfortunately, two of those three hits were home runs, including a two-run dinger that put the game out of reach for the Bears (5-5). The Gophers (4-3) held the Bears to a single hit in a 4-0 shutout to conclude the weekend at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational on Sunday.
Â
Against a predominantly top-25 field, the Bears finished 2-3 with upsets against No. 22 James Madison and No. 24 Notre Dame.
Â
Cal kept within striking distance on Sunday against its Big Ten rival, but could not get things going after
Lindsay Rood's lead-off single in the opening frame.
Â
Zoe Conley stepped in to relieve Dung, and gave up just one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings in hopes to get some late runs and showcase the same magical comeback from Saturday's tie-breaking win against the Fighting Irish.
Â
That would not come to fruition on Sunday as the Gophers retired three batters in a row after walking sophomore
Mikayla Coelho to open the half.
Ninemire's Notes
"These first two weeks have set us up for the rest of the season," said head coach
Diane Ninemire. "I'm really proud of this team and the fight and grit they've show in this first stretch. It was not easy. We have some things to clean up, but we're ready to grind."
Â
The Bears keep their travels going with a midweek contest at nearby Saint Mary's on Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. (PT) before heading to the prestigious Mary Nutter Classic in Palm Springs for a five-game slate Friday-Sunday.
