Bears Bounce Back With Two-Win Day
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – All the world's a stage for the Golden Bears, who delivered their share of drama on the diamond this weekend.
After three rounds of a tiebreaker to close Saturday's doubleheader with a 6-5 loss to New Mexico State, California opened Sunday against Long Beach State, appearing to be headed into another round of extended play as both squads posted six runs in the sixth inning to knot things at 9-9 headed into the final frame.
However, Cal rallied with three runs late in the seventh to hold onto a 12-9 hard-fought win over the Beach.
Senior
Lindsay Rood, who went 4-for-5, blasted the walk-off RBI triple to center to bring home
Jordan Fines who led off with a 2-1 double to build the late momentum. Cal added a pair of insurance runs as Rood came home on a ground out from
Amani Bradley, and
Mikayla Coelho found the plate after a walk, a single, a wild pitch and a sac fly.
The game turned into a long-shot battle after LBS's Nichole Fry knocked out a two-run home run to knot things at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Cal's freshman
Makena Smith decided to one-up Fry and went yard on a three-run shot to bring in
Sabrina Nunez and
Mikayla Coelho and moments later freshman
Alexandra Perez hit a solo homer to give Cal a 9-4 lead.
Beach got the message and responded with a grand slam to tie things once again heading into the seventh.
The Bears escaped playing small ball, which lifted them to a 3-1 lead in the fourth as they strung together three consecutive singles to bring in runs.
Senior co-ace
Kamalani Dung picked up the win after she took over the circle to relieve
Zoe Conley in the bottom of the sixth with loaded bases. Dung gave up two hits, two runs and two walks in 2.0 innings.
Ninemire's Notes
"We hit the ball pretty well today," head coach
Diane Ninemire said. "The younger players are coming through with their bats. Kama threw great relief and also came in with a complete game. We're looking forward to this weekend and hopefully this will prepare us for the strong competition we will be facing moving forward."
Cal 2, Fullerton 1
Dung pulled in two wins on the day, as she pitched a complete game in Cal's 2-1 win against Fullerton to close the weekend.
Junior
Destiny Blueford kept the yard work going as she blasted a two-run homer in the top of fourth to bring in
Alexandra Perez.
The Titans added a run in the bottom of the fifth to put some pressure on the Bears defense, but Cal kept the boards clear the final two innings.
The Bears will take a short trip to Santa Barbara for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Cal opens against Bowling Green at 11 a.m. (PT) and then take on host-team UCSB at 3:30 p.m. Saturday the Bears face LIU Brooklyn at 11 a.m., before closing against the Gauchos at 1:30 p.m.
