Anigwe Rises To Top Of Cal Scoring List

Senior Becomes Bears All-Time Leader In Loss To No. 3 Oregon

BERKELEY – Kristine Anigwe scored a singular point with 6:38 left in the first quarter Friday night that made her the Cal women's basketball program's all-time leading scorer.

It also gave the Bears a singular point on the scoreboard against the highest-scoring team in the nation.

"I was upset because we only had scored one point at that time," Anigwe said.

By that time, No. 3 Oregon was already up 12-0, and although Cal fought its way back to take a second-quarter lead, it wasn't enough in a 105-82 loss at Haas Pavilion.

Anigwe entered the night tied with Colleen Galloway atop the program's career scoring list with 2,320 points. She was fouled by Oregon center Ruthy Hebard and missed the first free throw at the 6:38 mark of the first period. But her second one was good to give her more career points than any Cal basketball player ever – male or female.

"I haven't really sat and thought about breaking the school record," said Anigwe, who finished with her 23rd straight double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds. "I'm just grateful for my family, my teammates and my coaches because I wouldn't be in this position without them."

Cal called a timeout shortly after Anigwe claimed the scoring record, and the crowd of 2,719 gave her a standing ovation as public address announcer Matt Foley made the official announcement. A tribute was then shown on the video board.

"I'm thrilled for her," said Galloway, who attended the game. "I've loved watching her. I've been so impressed with what she can do on the floor, and the tremendous young lady that she is. I'm honored to have my name next to hers."

Amazingly, Anigwe is now in position to make more history Sunday against No. 7 Oregon State as she needs just three more rebounds to also become Cal's all-time leading rebounder. Gennifer Brandon holds the Bears' all-time mark with 1,219 career boards.

"I think we're watching something pretty incredible unfold," Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb said.

Cal sophomore Kianna Smith tied a career-high with 20 points while graduate transfer Recee Caldwell added a season-high 22 points with seven assists, including a season-best six 3-pointers.

Oregon ultimately extended to a 14-1 advantage to begin the game, but Cal chipped away at the deficit, ultimately putting together an 18-8 run to go in front 32-30 midway through the second quarter.
The Ducks responded with a 14-2 streak to go back in front 44-34 with 31 seconds left in the half, and quickly pulled away in a decisive third quarter that was punctuated by a 3-pointer by National Player of the Year candidate Sabrina Ionescu with three seconds remaining.

"We had a terrific team come in here. They are a legitimate national title contender," Gottlieb said. "I think save for the first three or four minutes where we just kind of took a few punches, I thought we competed from there."

Ionescu, the NCAA all-time leader in triple-doubles, finished with 27 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

As the teams shook hands after the game, Oregon coach Kelly Graves had a message for Anigwe.

"I told her I was glad we didn't have to play her anymore," he said. "She's pretty good."

In terms of scorers at Cal, the best, in fact.
