Bears Outlast Huskies

Cal Continues Win Streak With 71-65 Win At Washington

SEATTLE – The Cal women's basketball team extended its winning streak to three in a row, beating Washington 71-65 on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Golden Bears (17-11, 8-9 Pac-12) held off a strong fourth quarter charge by the Huskies (9-19, 2-14 Pac-12) to snap a three-game losing streak away from Berkeley.

Four different players scored in double-figures for the Bears, who have now their last five matchups against Washington. Senior center Kristine Anigwe led the Bears with 20 points and 18 rebounds while classmate Asha Thomas added 16 points, going 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Kianna Smith and Jaelyn Brown scored 11 points apiece for the Bears, who shot 51 percent (28-55) from the floor and 53 percent (10-19) from beyond the arc in the win.

With her 20 points and 18 rebounds against the Huskies, Anigwe extended her double-double streak to 29 in a row, tying former Oregon start Jillian Alleyne for the longest streak in Pac-12 women's basketball history and the fourth-longest ever in Division I.

Missy Peterson led the Huskies with 23 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three while Amber Melgoza added 22 points and six rebounds.

Cal opened the game on a 7-0 run and led 23-19 after the first quarter, going 5-for-7 from beyond the arc to start the game. Washington capitalized on five Cal turnovers in the second quarter and trailed by only two points heading in to halftime.

Looking keep building momentum through March, Cal opened the third quarter on a 16-2 run. The Bears took their largest lead of the night at 53-37 after a layup by grad transfer Recee Caldwell. The reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, Caldwell finished with five points and eight assists while committing just one turnover in 37 minutes of action.

However, the Huskies steadily chipped into Cal's lead, powered by 10 fourth-quarter points from Peterson. Washington made it a one possession game with 4:28 left to play after a finish down low by Darcy Reese made it 64-61. But the Bears responded immediately with a three-pointer by Thomas and closed out the game down the stretch for their second conference road win of the year.

Cal will head across the state to Pullman, Washington for its final game of the 2018-19 regular season. The Bears take on Washington State (9-19, 4-13 Pac-12) at Noon PT on Sunday in a game that will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks. The Bears have won six of the last seven meetings with the Cougars, including a 77-63 victory earlier this season in Berkeley.
