Cal Heads North For Hornet Invitational
Cal Track & Field Travels To Sacramento For the Second Meet Of The Outdoor Season
BERKELEY – Cal track and field heads to Sacramento on Friday and Saturday to compete in its second outdoor meet of the season at the Hornet . The Bears opened the outdoor season by hosting the California Outdoor Opener where they collected 21 individual wins.
Both Cal's men's and women's teams are the reigning champions of the Hornet Invitational, and walked away with a plethora of individual victories following last year's meet. Cal will open the meet with two competitors in a scaled-back Friday section.
Terence Wilson will compete in the hammer throw at 10 a.m. while
Hakim McMorris will take part in the first day of decathlon action. Saturday's action starts at 9 a.m.
During the Cal Opener student-athletes
Deshae Wise,
Jasher Foster, and
Joshua Johnson all notched mark's on the school's top 10 list.
Wise moved to the highest place on a list out of the three athletes — claiming the 5th place slot in the 100m hurdles with a time 13.69. Along the way, Wise also earned first place in the event. Later in the day Wise showcased her speed as she helped her relay squad in 4x100m secure a first place finish. Her skillset will be on full display as she will compete in the 100m, 110m hurdles and as part of the 4x100m team.
Foster, who made his outdoor-debut with Cal, got off to a hot start by moving into the No. 9 spot in school history with a time of 13.82 in the 110m hurdles. Foster is slated to compete in the 100m and 110m hurdles at the Hornet Invitational.
Johnson threw for a mark of 60-6.00 in the shot put at Cal's Opener, good for 10th place on the all-time list and first in the event. Last year, as a freshman, he earned a victory in the shot put at the Hornet Invitational, besting teammates
Iffy Joyner and
Malik McMorris who took second and third, respectively.
In the season opener, Joyner took second to Johnson in the shot put, but the two Cal throwers have established a healthy competition amongst the throwers. Joyner bested Johnson in the discus event with a personal best mark of 183-2. Johnson, Joyner and McMorris will all compete in both the shot put and discus this weekend.
The Bears who saw action in last week's home opener look to build upon their successes and steadily improve upon their performances; those who did not participate will have their first chance of the outdoor season to showcase their skills.
