Sophomore Guard Earns Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention

SAN FRANCISCO - Cal guard Kianna Smith has been recognized for her strong performance both on the court and in the classroom this season, earning Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention as the conference announced its academic awards on Thursday.

To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average, be either a starter or significant contributor, and appear in over 50 percent of team games that season.

This marks the third consecutive season the Bears have had at least one student-athlete collect Pac-12 All-Academic honors.

A sophomore from Moreno Valley, California, Smith has a cumulative GPA of 3.29 and is majoring in Business Administration, having been accepted into the prestigious undergraduate program at the Haas School of Business earlier this semester.

A Pac-12 All-Freshman Selection in 2018, Smith has built upon her success as a rookie with a strong sophomore campaign. Smith has started all 31 games for the Bears this season and is averaging career-highs in both scoring (9.6 points per game) and three-point field goal percentage (39.5 percent). Playing alongside veterans Asha Thomas and Recee Caldwell in the backcourt, Smith has helped the Bears set a program record with a total of 223 three-pointers this season.

Smith and the Golden Bears look to hear their names called on Monday afternoon when the field for the 2019 Women's NCAA Basketball Tournament is revealed on Selection Monday. Cal is looking to make its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and 14th overall in program history.
