BERKELEY - An initial defensive standoff broke open towards halftime and No. 16 USC defeated California, 16-4, Friday afternoon from California Memorial Stadium. The Golden Bears fell to 5-8, 2-4 on the year.
Caroline Corzel scored twice for Cal, while
Kirsten Swanson and
Nikki Zaccaro also found the back of the net.
Lizabanks Campagna notched five draws, helping the Bears beat the Trojans in that stat category, 11-10.
After USC scored the first goal of the game, Corzel netted her first to even the game at one. A defensive struggle ensued for the majority of the first half until the Trojans put a couple tallies on the board to extend their lead.
Later in the opening half, Zaccaro found the back of the net when she beat her defender to the goal and snuck a shot past the goalie for Cal's second score of the day.
Late in the first half, Swanson successfully converted her free-position attempt for Cal's third tally. The second half was all USC, though, except for Corzel securing her second goal of the day with the assist coming from
Susie Ropp.
Jenny Wilkens picked up two ground balls, and she is now four shy of the school career record.
Cal hosts Arizona State on Sunday at noon for Senior Day.
