Cal On Mercy-Rule Streak

HONOLULU – The Bears continue to add to their notable program run as they conclude the day with a five-inning win over Hawai'i to extend their run-rule streak to five, an achievement that has been unmatched in at least 10 seasons.

Cal (14-7) moved into early decision eligibility after an eight-run frame in the second inning highlighted by a pair of multi-run dingers from Lindsay Rood and Mikayla Coelho.

The 14-0 shutout of the Rainbow Wahine (13-5) was as noteworthy historically as it was sentimental with senior ace Kamalani Dung pitching, likely for the final time, in her home state and nearby hometown.

Walking off the field to cheers, tears, media, and fans from both teams, Dung, who is from Waianae, about 30 miles away from Honolulu, has produced distinguished moments at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in her two appearances.

Last year, she threw Cal's first perfect game since 2010 in a 4-0 shutout against UTEP. Tonight, the Bear gave up just three hits and two walks, throwing eight strikeouts as Cal delivered a donut for the second time this week.

"It was an amazing feeling because I got to play both my perfect game and this last game at home. This game made me more emotional than the last time because it's the last time I'll ever play on this field," said Dung, who began to tear up during the third inning. "During the game I had flashbacks of playing on this field throughout high school. It's incredible seeing how far I've come.

"A few girls from my old high school asked me what they could do to get to the level I've made it to and it's awesome to see the young athletes in the shoes I was once in. It's bittersweet when you think about the moment you're in and that it's almost over."

While the Bears have just four more preseason games, starting with tomorrow's rematch against St. Bonaventure at 3 p.m. (PT), the immediate moment deserves celebration.

Makena Smith, Destiny Blueford and Rood co-led with three hits each.

Rood included a three-run shot and a double in her arsenal, also recording three runs and three RBI. Coelho, who brought in two runs on a homer, also crossed the plate on three occasions.

The win marks Cal's sixth shutout of the season and third in the last five outings.

Cal 13, Niagara 7
California (13-7) enjoyed a deluge of runs in the opening frames to produce a comfortable 14-3 win against Niagara (0-2) to start its doubleheader slate on Thursday at the Outrigger Resort Spring Fling Tournament.

The Golden Bears recorded 10 runs within the first two frames, looking for its fourth consecutive run rule. And with 10 different players crossing the plate, led by infielder Lindsay Rood's three scores, Cal achieved its goal, becoming the first team since at least 2010 to reach that feat.

Cal picked up number three against St. Bonaventure on Wednesday (8-0) marking the first time since 2016 that Cal has earned a trio of consecutive five-inning wins.

The streak began a week ago in Santa Barbara when Cal recorded an 11-3 win against Bowling Green before shutting out UCSB 11-0.

Senior leadoff Rood topped the Bears offense, collecting three hits and three RBI on a pair of doubles. The Pac-12 stolen base leader added steal 16 to the fold as well in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Mikayla Coelho, the team's power hitter, and freshman catcher and first baseman Makena Smith added two runs each and an RBI apiece.

No. 2 hitter Amani Bradley, utility player Jordan Fines and hot corner specialist Karlee Sparacino each went 2-for-3 in the outing and added a pair of RBIs to contribute to the lopsided victory.

Freshman pitcher Alexandra Perez picked up her fourth win of the year in a back-to-back effort, finishing with three hits, one earned run, two walks and a strikeout in 5.0 innings.

The Bears continue their play in paradise with an evening bout against Hawaii at 8 p.m. (PT).
