Oregon Beats Cal, 12-8

Wilkens Tied The School Record For Career Ground Balls

EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon held the California offense in check, and the Golden Bears fell to Oregon, 12-8, Friday night from Pape Field on the Oregon campus.

Cal fell to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in Pac-12 games.

Kirsten Swanson paced Cal in scoring with five points on three goals and two assists. Susie Ropp also scored twice and Nikki Zaccaro tallied two assists to add to her team-leading total on the season.

The Bears boasted five goal scorers on the day as Eliza Christman, Caroline Corzel and Ashley Ward each found the back of the net once on Friday. Swanson took nine shots, while Christman recorded eight.

Christman scored the first goal of the day to put the Bears up, 1-0, before the Ducks took a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back goals from Ward and Ropp gave Cal a 3-2 lead 10 minutes into the contest. The Bears could only muster one more first-half goal, and Oregon took a 7-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After an early second-half goal by Oregon, there was no scoring from either team until the 13:56 mark when Swanson strung together back-to-back tallies to cut the Ducks' lead down to two, 8-6.

That would be as close as the Bears would get, though, as Oregon maintained control the rest of the way.

As has been the case most of the season, Cal won the draw control battle, 16-6, led by Swanson's four. Christman and Marina Smith chipped in with three each.

Jenny Wilkens picked up one ground ball against the Ducks, giving her 162 for her career, which ties for the career school record.

Kendall Swenson caused two turnovers and picked up a draw, while Lizabanks Campagna recorded two ground balls, two draws and caused one turnover.

Cal heads to Colorado to face the No. 22 Buffaloes on Sunday at 2 p.m. That game will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
