Bears Split Day With Wolf Pack
BERKELEY – California found favor in game 2 of an early week doubleheader that tested its defensive stability.
Senior ace
Zoe Conley mustered up seven critical strikeouts as she pitched a 10.0-inning win to help the Golden Bears recover with a 3-2 decision, to split the day after a game 1 loss to the visiting Wolfpack of Nevada.
The win was clinched by a late-inning offensive effort, after the Bears kept the Wolf Pack scoreless for five consecutive frames.
Destiny Blueford, who led off with a first-pitch single, made her way home a wild pitch for the walk-off score. Blueford went 1-for-4 and but proved lethal once on the base. She advanced on a fielder's choice and then stole third to put pressure on Nevada.
Leadoff hitter
Lindsay Rood led the game with two runs, going 2-for-4 in the second game and holds a .402 average after the day. The senior short stop also added two stolen bases as she made her way around the diamond, picking up her Pac-12 leading 29th pilfered bag.
Cal 3, Nevada 4
The day provided much parity for the Bears, who spent most of game 1 knotted with the Pack after recovering from a two-run deficit in the first inning.
Senior
Krysten McCue and
Amani Bradley brought in the first two runs, respectively, before the Bears took a 3-2 lead on an RBI single from Bradley to plate
Sabrina Nunez.
Cal kept Nevada scoreless through the middle innings, but allowed the Wolf Pack to bring in two runs in the top of the seventh to bookend the effort.
The loss was Cal's first at home in nonconference play since March 27 and just the second of the season.
The Bears close their final homestand of the year in a Friday-Sunday series versus No.5/4 Arizona, who leads the Pac-12 with 15 straight league wins.
On Sunday, Cal will celebrate its six departing seniors.
