Cal Overcomes Pacific 5-1
BERKELEY – The Golden Bears found comfort in the beautiful confines of Levine-Fricke Field on Wednesday.
Â
California (21-15, 1-7 Pac-12) clipped its six-game losing streak with a  decisive 5-1 win over the Pacific Tigers to open an eight-game homestand.
Â
Hungry to get back into the win column, the Bears pounced on the Tigers with a four-run first inning to pull ahead comfortably, after giving up an early run in the top of the inning.
Â
Recording just one hit in the frame, Cal capitalized off of Pacific's string of errors – four in fact – to reach home.
Â
Lindsay Rood (2-for-4) led off with a single up the middle, before stealing second, her 24th of the season, in as many attempts. The senior advanced to third as
Amani Bradley (2-for-4) reached on the Tigers' first error.
Â
Mikayla Coelho (0-for-3) drew the walk to load the bases and
Makena Smith (1-for-3) followed suit and picked up the RBI on the base on balls, allowing Rood an easy trip to the plate.
Â
Lauren Espalin (2-for-4) also reached on an error at first that brought Bradley home.
Â
Pacific (14-18, 0-0 WCC) gave up another two runs bringing in Smith and Coelho after catcher's interference allowed
Karlee Sparacino to reach and the Tigers' pitcher Myka Sutherlin lackadaisically threw the ball wide to the catcher confusing her teammates, but giving the green light to the Bears runners.
Â
Senior ace
Kamalani Dung threw a complete game giving up just two hits and one run. Dung retired nine at the plate and recorded five walks.
Â
The Bears continue their homestand with a Friday-Sunday series against No. 3 Washington. The games will be live streamed on Pac-12.com with Game 1 slated for a 3 p.m. (PT) start.
