BERKELEY – Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn was named a semifinalist for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award, once again in the running for the prestigious honor he won last year as a sophomore.

Vaughn is one of 25 players nationwide who made the semifinal cut from a large pool of candidates who had made the Midseason Watch List.

Fan voting makes up a small percentage of the final results, and fans can cast their vote for the Bears' first baseman up to 25 times per day, through May 26 at https://www.usabaseball.com/golden-spikes-award/nominees/2019.

In 2018, Vaughn became the first Cal player ever to win the Golden Spikes, given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. There has never been a repeat winner, and Vaughn is one of only four Golden Spikes winners ever to return to school the year after winning the award.

The junior has turned in quite the encore in 2019. With six games left in the regular season, Vaughn is hitting .374 with 14 homers and 47 RBI.

He ranks fifth nationally with a .530 on-base percentage, reflecting his status as one of the most feared hitters in college baseball. Opponents have issued him 50 walks, third-most in the Pac-12. Vaughn is third in the conference in slugging percentage (.712), and that .374 batting average is fifth.

This marks the sixth time that Cal has had a player reach the semifinal stage. Vaughn has done it twice. He was preceded by catcher Brett Cumberland (2016), first baseman David Cooper and second baseman Josh Satlin (2008) and pitcher Tyson Ross (2007).

A voting committee will cast votes for three players each, and the Golden Spikes finalists will be announced May 29. The ceremony announcing the winner will take place June 14.
