Cal Finishes 10th At NCAA Championships

Golden Bears’ Season Ends A Single Stroke Shy Of Playoff For Final Match-Play Spot

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – California (292-301-306-298 – 1197, +45) finished 10th at the NCAA Championships that concluded 72 holes of stroke play Monday at the Blessings Golf Club. The Golden Bears missed advancing to match play for the first time since 2013 by a single stroke but the 10th-place finish was Cal's best at the NCAA's since the Golden Bears tied for third twice in a row by reaching the match-play semifinals in both 2012 and 2013. This season's appearance was Cal's first at the NCAA's since 2016.

"Obviously I'm disappointed that we came up short, but I'm really proud of the guys for playing well in really tough conditions," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf Walter Chun said. "We had the fourth-best score of the day today and these are the top teams that are playing well at the NCAA's. Obviously, I wish we would have advanced, but I'm really proud of the guys for just playing tough, never giving up and giving a good fight today."

"It came down to a shot," Collin Morikawa said. "It always does. That's golf."

Morikawa (67-72-76-73 – 288, E) was the Golden Bears' top finisher in a tie for sixth place and was followed by Kaiwen Liu (72-77-76-75 – 300, +12) in a tie for 41st, KK Limbhasut (79-76-73-76 – 304, +16) in a tie for 57th and Jamie Cheatham (74-76-81-74 – 305, +17) in a tie for 61st. Sebastian Crampton (83-80-81-DNP) and James Song (DNP-DNP-DNP-78) also played at the NCAA's but did not have official finishing places with Crampton playing the first three rounds before Song replaced him in the lineup for Monday's fourth and final round.

The end of the 2018-19 season also meant the end of the collegiate careers for senior class of Morikawa, Limbhasut, Crampton and Ben Doyle. The foursome combined to play in 174 stroke-play events and 713 rounds during their Cal careers. Fifth-year seniors Crampton, Doyle and Limbhasut came in together in the fall of 2014 and were joined by Morikawa one year later.

"I really don't know how to put it into words," Morikawa said. "There are a lot of memories coming through. It's kind of crazy how quick four years went. I had a great time with these guys. It's something I'm always going to remember and be able to look back on. It's special."

"It's going to be sad and hard to see them go, but they are ready for their next journey in life," Chun added.

Top-seeded Oklahoma State (290-276-286-284 – 1136, -16) won the stroke-play portion of the team competition by 31 strokes and will be the top seed in match play that begins with quarterfinals and semifinals Tuesday before Wednesday's championship match.

Oklahoma State will play No. 8 seed SMU in one quarterfinal after the Mustangs defeated Clemson in a playoff for the final match play spot. The other quarterfinals will pit No. 2 Vanderbilt against No. 7 Texas A&M, No. 3 Wake Forest against No. 6 Stanford and No. 4 Oklahoma against No. 5 Texas. The Oklahoma State/SMU and Oklahoma/Texas winners will meet in one semifinal with the Vanderbilt/Texas A&M and Wake Forest/Stanford winners playing in the other.

Oklahoma State's Matthew Wolff (73-66-70-69 – 278, -10) was the individual medalist with a five-stroke victory over Georgia Southern's Steven Fisk (76-68-68-71 – 283, -5).
