BERKELEY - Cal men's water polo alums
Luca Cupido and
Johnny Hooper helped the U.S. National Team book its ticket to the 2020 Summer Olympics on Saturday night after defeating Canada 18-6 in the Gold Medal Match of the 2019 Pan American Games.
The championship gives Team USA an automatic berth to the Tokyo Games. It will mark Cupido's second straight trip to the Olympics.
Cal assistant coach
Jeff Tyrrell and former Cal standout Gavin Arroyo also helped the Americans win the Pan Am gold medal as part of the team's coaching staff. Arroyo is also the head coach at Long Beach State.
Cupido wrapped up a decorated career at Cal in 2017, winning the Peter J. Cutino Award as the nation's top player. A four-time All-American, Cupido started every game for Team USA during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Hooper was also a four-time All-American at Cal and finished his career in Berkeley last season ranked second on the program's all-time list with 245 career goals. He was Team USA's leading scorer at last month's FINA World Championships.
Counting staff, the Bears now have seven Olympians qualified for Tokyo in water polo. Friday, senior Emma Wright as well as alums Kindred Paul and Kelly McKee helped Canada earn its place next summer by advancing to the Pan Am Games Gold Medal Match, where they settled for the silver medal after falling to the U.S. in the finals.
