DAVIS – California cross country returned to action after a two-week hiatus on Friday evening at the Stump Invitational with a solid showing from both squads. The Cal women claimed second and the Golden Bear men took third at the inaugural event hosted by UC Davis.

In her debut race as a member of the Cal running corps, Mina Anglero took first in the women's 6K, besting Julia Lemark of UC Davis to claim her first collegiate cross country win. Anglero jumped to an early lead and eventually broke away from the pack, crossing the line in 21:43.9 to win the inaugural race at Wildhorse Golf Club.

As a team, the Golden Bear women earned their second consecutive top-three finish of the season on Friday evening, falling just behind UC Davis (25 points) to finish second with 33 points. Chico State, St. Mary's and San Francisco rounded out the top five, while Santa Clara and Pacific finished sixth and seventh respectively at the meet. The women's squad ended the evening with four runners in the top-10 in back-to-back meets. Sophomore Marea Zlatunich continued her strong start to the season, crossing the line at 22:09.2 to finish fourth. Annie Boos was the next highest finisher with a time of 22:15.3 to take sixth and Meredith Corda finished ninth with a 22:26.9 mark.

"Overall, I thought it was a strong team effort," head coach Bobby Lockhart said. "Mina opened up with an outstanding victory. She powered home and looked great in her first ever cross country race. I'm pleased with the way we ran after coming off our last few weeks of workouts and practice. Ultimately, our goal was to come in here and put together a strong showing. We're able to walk away from this meet knowing we're a little bit stronger, and we'll continue to work hard leading up to our next race in Sacramento."

On the men's side, Colin FitzGerald continued his strong showing for the Golden Bears, finishing seventh at 25:25.3 to lead Cal to a third-place finish with 76 points. Trevor Woodward was the next top-scorer for the Bears, finishing 11th at 25:41.3. Steven Khan and Ben Harper finished 21st and 30th with times of 25:58.3 and 26:15.7 respectively. Moises Medrano, Shane Bissell and Andrew Cooper also competed for the Bears. Chico State won the men's race with 18 points, followed by UC Davis, Cal, St. Mary's and San Francisco in the top five.

"I thought they moved through the field extremely well," Lockhart said. "They put together a solid 26 minutes of running. They never gave in when the race got tough and they stayed gritty throughout the entire competition. You can't knock their effort. It's not the result we wanted, but we'll go back and continue to adjust our approach going into Sacramento and prepare to run our best race in a few weeks."

The Bears next compete on September 28 at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacremento, Calif. hosted by Sacramento State.
