Shutout Streak Continues

Cal Tops UC Irvine, 1-0, Behind Westin's First-Half Goal

IRVINE, Calif. – Another ninety minutes, another clean sheet for the Golden Bears. The Cal women's soccer team extended its shutout streak to six games in a row, blanking UC Irvine, 1-0, on Friday night at Anteater Stadium in Irvine. The Golden Bears (6-0-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) continued their perfect start to the season, recording yet another shutout and getting the decisive goal in the 21st minute from junior Emma Westin, who now has six goals in six games this season.

"We are happy with this win on the road against a very well organized UC Irvine team," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire, who has his squad off to the program's best start in five years. "Coach Juniper's game plan was hard to break down and I am pleased with the maturity of our team."

Looking to pick up its third road win of the year, the Golden Bears generated several chances in the opening minutes of the match, but failed to find the mark. Yet Cal's perseverance soon paid off as Westin added her second game-winning goal of the year with a strike in the 21st minute. Senior captain Mia Corbin started the play when she picked out midfielder Luca Deza in the midfield. Deza pinged the ball out to Westin, who fired a shot from 30-yards out, beating UCI goalkeeper Maddie Newsom.

A junior forward/midfielder and member of Sweden's Under-23 Women's National Team, Westin has already eclipsed her goal total from her first two seasons in Berkeley combined, and is tied for third in the Pac-12 in scoring with six goals on the season. Corbin picked up her team-leading fourth assist of the season while Deza added her seventh point of the season, good for second on the squad in 2019.

Corbin and Deza paced the Bears with four shots each on the afternoon, as Cal outshot UC Irvine 13-5 overall and held an 8-2 edge on corner kicks.

While the Bears were unable to find the back of the net again, Cal's defensive corps was once again up to the challenge.

Freshman goalkeeper Angelina Anderson made a career-high three saves on the night as the Bears extended their shutout streak to 540 minutes. Newsom made three stops for the Anteaters in the loss.

The Bears' six-game shutout streak is Cal's longest shutout streak since the 2005 season and is tied for the second-longest in the 38 seasons of Cal women's soccer. With Friday's clean sheet against the Anteaters and a 3-0 loss by Arizona, Cal is now the only program in Division I women's soccer that has yet to allow a goal this season. The Bears have also held their opponents to just seven shots on target all season, also the fewest by any team in the nation.

Cal looks to carry that focus and commitment into Sunday's matchup with rival Santa Clara (4-3-0, 0-0-0 WCC). The Bears and Broncos will square off at 3 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium, in a match that will also be televised live on Pac-12 Networks. The series between the two Bay Area schools dates back to 1982, which Cal holding a slim 21-19-7 lead in the all-time meetings.
