John Ralston Passes Away At Age 92
Former Cal Player, Coach Earned Induction Into College Football Hall Of Fame
BERKELEY – John Ralston, who participated in the Rose Bowl as a member of the Cal football team as a player and coach, passed away Saturday in Sunnyvale. He was 92.
Ralston played linebacker for Cal as part of "Pappy's Boys" from 1948-50, when the Bears earned a Rose Bowl berth for three consecutive seasons. He later returned to Berkeley as an assistant coach from 1956-58, helping the Bears reach the Rose Bowl game again in 1959.
Ralston went on to become the head coach at Utah State, Stanford, San Jose State and the Denver Broncos. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
In 1997, Ralston received the Glenn Seaborg Award, which is presented annually to a former Cal football player for his career accomplishments who represents the honored Cal principles and traditions of excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and attitude.
