Craig Morton to Receive Glenn Seaborg Award

Former Cal All-American Quarterback Recognized For Career Achievements

Craig Morton, a record-setting quarterback for the Golden Bears in the early 1960s who led two different teams to the Super Bowl during an 18-year NFL career, will receive the 25th annual Glenn Seaborg Award this fall.

Named in honor of the Nobel Laureate and former UC Berkeley chancellor, the Seaborg Award is presented annually to a former Cal football player for his career accomplishments who represents the honored Cal principles and traditions of excellence in academics, athletics, leadership and attitude. This year's ceremony will take place during the Cal-USC football game on Nov. 16.

Morton was Cal's starting quarterback in 1962, '63 and '64, and he set nearly every school passing record during his time behind center. As a senior, he completed more than 60 percent of his passes for 2,121 yards and 13 TDs. As a result, he was named a first-team All-American, first-team all-conference and winner of the Pop Warner Trophy as the top senior on the West Coast. Morton finished his Cal career with 4,501 passing yards, which stood as school and Pac-8 records at the time.

Morton was taken with the sixth overall pick of the 1965 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, becoming the first of now six Cal QBs chosen in the first round. He remained with Dallas through 1974 before also playing with the New York Giants and Denver Broncos. Morgan guided both the Cowboys and Broncos to the Super Bowl.

In 1992, Morton was inducted into both the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame and the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame.
