Queen Abbey Continues Her Reign
Weitzeil Sets Record In Winning Opening Meet For Second Straight Year
SAN LUIS OBISPO –
Abbey Weitzeil won four of five individual races Friday, kicking off her senior year by claiming the Queen of the Pool competition at Cal Poly for the second year in a row. Her combined time of 4:38.76 set a record for the event, bettering the mark of 4:39.54 by
Kathleen Baker from two years ago.
The meet features each swimmer taking part in 100-yard races in free, fly, back and breast events, plus a 100-yard individual medley. The person with the lowest total time is crowned queen.
Sophomore
Isabel Ivey claimed the 100 fly in 54.87, with Weitzeil taking second in 55.30. Weitzeil then touched first in the next four events – 100 back (55.29), 100 breast (1:03.93), 100 free (48.45) and 100 IM (55.79).
Weitzeil's overall time of 3:38.76 was nearly five seconds faster then she went last year when she won in 4:44.22. In the 10 years that Cal and Cal Poly have held the Queen of the Pool, only Weitzeil and Baker have broken the 4:40 barrier.
Ivey, who posted top-three results in the back, free and IM, was second overall in 4:47.36, while sophomore
Alicia Wilson was third in 4:48.64.
"We had some good racing today, and Abbey certainly did a nice job all the way through," head coach
Teri McKeever said. "We had 10 swimmers break five minutes, and we saw lots of good things to build on. We'll spend the rest of the weekend swimming in relays with our men's team and also taking time for ocean training."
In the men's King of the Pool competition. Zheng Wen Quah claimed the crown with a time of 4:02.68
Cal returns to the water Oct. 11-12 for the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Fresno State, while the Bears' home opener is Oct. 24 vs. Washington State.
