Cal Clipped By Portland

Bears Suffer First Loss Of Season in 2-0 Defeat vs Pilots

BERKELEY -  Cal's win streak came to an end on Sunday as the Golden Bears fell to Portland, 2-0, in their non-conference finale at Edwards Stadium. The loss was the first of the season for the Golden Bears (8-1-0, 0-0-0), who entered the day as one of only five teams in women's Division I soccer with an unblemished record. However, the Pilots (4-2-2, 0-0-0 WCC) were able to prevail on the afternoon behind second-half goals from Jamie Rita and Rachel Khaw, and the Bears were held scoreless for the first time this season.

"You have to credit Portland, who came in and played a very good game," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "They were very disciplined, very organized, and their game plan was excellent, so credit to them. We obviously will learn a great deal from this game. When we look at the overall record from the non-conference, we're very proud of our achievements at 8-1. We would have probably taken that at the start of the season. We'll learn from the film, we'll get better, and we'll be ready for Pac-12s."

Cal's 8-0 start matched the Bears' 2000 squad for the second-best start to a season in program history, while Cal's eight-game winning streak was the team's longest since 2012.

Playing its final match before opening play, Cal dictated tempo in the early stages of the match, earning its first corner of the game within the first five minutes of the match. Cal held a 9-1 advantage on corner kicks on the day, including a 5-0 margin in the first half. The Bears outshot the Pilots, 6-1, in the first 45 minutes, but were unable to find the back of the net. One of Cal's best chances in the first half came in the 6th minute, when sophomore midfielder Paige Metayer saw her shot from distance rattle off the far post. Striker Abi Kim had a great run in on goal in the 22nd minute off a throughball from Luca Deza, but her shot rang off the far post as well.

Scoreless through the first 45 minutes, Portland upped its pressure in the opening stages of the second halve and earned its first corner of the day in the 46th minute. The visitors would get on the board shortly after, as Jamie Rita headed in a cross from Taryn Ries.

Trailing for the first time all season after the goal by Rita, the Bears pushed into the attack, looking for an equalizer. Portland was able to capitalize, doubling its lead in the 81st minute when Khaw picked off a backpass. The Pilots senior got in one-on-one with Cal goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and put her initial shot off the post, but followed it up and finished her own rebound.

The Bears looked primed to pull one back in the closing minutes of the match, but Portland goalkeeper Jenny Wahlen made a pair of point-blank saves, first Oregon-native Emma Treasure on a look from inside the box and then coming up big again on a chance from Kim.

Wahlen made three saves on the afternoon while Anderson recorded one save for the Bears.

Cal returns to action on Friday, kicking, kicking off Pac-12 play at UCLA (5-1-1, 0-0-0 Pac-12). The Bears and Bruins will kick off at 7 p.m. PT on Friday night in Westwood, in a match that will be carried live on Pac-12 Networks.
