No. 12 Delaware Beats Bears, 4-1
Cal Scored First On Friday
NEWARK, Del. - Although California got on the board first at No. 12 Delaware, the Blue Hens scored four answered goals to beat the Golden Bears, 4-1, Friday afternoon on the Delaware campus.Â
Cal fell to 2-6 on the year.Â
After a scoreless first quarter,
Katrina Carter scored her team-leading third goal of the season to put the Bears up, 1-0.
Femke Delissen recorded the assist, her fourth of the road trip. She is now all alone in ninth in school history in career assists with 19.Â
"We had a strong start with possession of the ball quite a bit," head coach
Shellie Onstead said. "We were pretty confident and calm at the start of the game. We're trying to vary our attack and how we actually get the ball into the circle. This was a hard-hit ball from the outside that kind of took their defense by surprise, and Katrina was in the right place and finished. It was awesome."
Carter paced the Bears with two shots, while Delissen and
Megan Rodgers recorded one each.Â
Delaware put the pressure on in the second quarter, forcing six penalty corners. After the Bears fended off the the first few, Delaware finally cashed in to tie the game late in the first half.Â
After halftime, Delaware took a 2-1 lead in the third quarter before adding two more in the fourth to clinch the win.Â
"We actually dug in and started to get a little bit going late," Onstead said. "We let some of the conditions get to us, and that's just going to be a good learning experience. Those are a couple things we can take away from this and get better at. In the fourth quarter, we did rise up and play better, but we just dug ourselves in too big of a hole. We played to the end. I pulled our goalie with a couple minutes left to see what we could do in that situation, and we got some sustained pressure and really good chances out of that."
The Bears head to Drexel on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT to close out the road trip.
