Cal-Arizona State Postgame Quotes

California Head Coach Justin Wilcox
On Devon Modster's performance replacing Chase Garbers:

"He did all right. It's not an easy situation, but that's being a backup quarterback. Devon could have played better, and he will if need be."

On defending ASU quarterback Jayden Daniels:
"When he buys time in the passing game and you're in a zone coverage, it's hard to cover for eight seconds if you don't get to the quarterback. We did a really poor job on defense. You have to give them credit. They did a good job. But we played poorly."

On tackling better:
"It starts with me. We have to do a better job teaching it until we tackle better. Give them credit. They have some really good players. But we have to tackle better and play better on defense."

Cameron Goode, OLB
On locker room scene and morale for Cal Football:
"Obviously, we are not down, but we are just hungry. We want to come back, we are not used to losing, we just know we have to play better and we are hungry to get back to work and get a [win] in Oregon next week."

On Jayden Daniels' play and what made it tough for the defense:
"Obviously he is good on his feet. We did our best to contain him. We got a takeaway from (Daniels) today but he is a good player and we could have played a little bit better."

On ASU running back Eno Benjamin and his game:
"He is a good back. I wouldn't say he is the toughest but he runs hard and we should have limited the yards a little bit more."

On heading into Oregon:
"We just got to limit those runs and get to third down quicker, get more third downs. Then when we get to third down, (we need to) just contain the quarterback and not let them keep picking up these first downs and get off the field so our offense can get some points."

Evan Weaver, ILB
On Coach Wilcox's frustration and how Cal played on defense:
"Horrible. Didn't play (well). They outplayed us, out-schemed us. We just have to make plays and we didn't make them."

On Cal's missed tackles:
"Yeah, I mean they have good players. (They) broke some tackles, (but we) didn't play very well and that was it. They outplayed us in every aspect."

Trevon Clark , WR
On mindset heading into next week and the mood in the locker room:
"As a team we are looking at it not as a loss but as a lesson. Monday we are going to come through that door and we are going to work to beat Oregon, plain and simple."

On attitude of the offense moving forward:
"As an offense this week, we are just going to work on firing on all cylinders. We are going to work on staying explosive through all four quarters."

Devon Modster, QB
On his start and what he needs to improve:
"Honestly I think I played terrible, could play a lot better, just missing a lot of receivers. I will pick it up next week. It doesn't hurt  my confidence, I know what I am capable of so just got to grind next week and prepare for Oregon."

Arizona State Head Coach Herm Edwards
Opening Comments:
"First of all, I told (California Head Coach Justin) Wilcox I hope his quarterback (Chase Garbers) is going to be OK. I saw the young man get hit right in front of me and fell on his shoulder. That had a lot to do with the outcome of this game. When you lose your quarterback like that, it's an emotional loss as a football team. I'm hoping he's going to be OK. These guys have done a great job coaching their football team. They play hard on both sides of the ball, they have an identity. We were very fortunate to get the win today. We were pretty sloppy at times, on all sides of it. We made it hard. But, to their credit, our staff got them ready to play in a tough place. It's hard to play in this place. It was one of those games. I felt like if we could withstand the barrage early, we'd have a chance. We're a little bit wounded. Our team is a bit beat up. This bye week couldn't come at a better time. We need to rest."

On going on the road and beating two ranked teams:
"They don't know the difference, whether it's a ranked team or not. Coaches need a lot of credit. After that loss at home, to come on the road and play this team is a handful. They did a great job in getting our guys ready to play."

On ASU's defense elevating its game after last week's loss:
"Everyone elevated their game tonight. Last week was a little bit of a shocker. This is a resilient bunch. It doesn't matter what it looks like, they continue to find ways to keep themselves in the football game. If you do that, you have a chance. Football is about opportunities. We missed some today, but when we needed to make them, the offense went down and took the lead and the defense shut them out."

On RB Eno Benjamin's performance:
"We knew it was going to be a battle against a tough defense. We didn't give up on it, and eventually we punched our way in there."

On limiting the Cal offense down the stretch:
"We forced them to throw the ball. We had to put our best guys on their guys and go cover them. Don't let them breathe. Just get up there and go get them. Cover them and let's go. We had nothing to lose. We're playing the 15th ranked team on the road. You can't be afraid to win. We had nothing to lose. The pressure was on them. There's still a lot of things we need to work on as a team. There's a lot of learning still with this team. There's always room to get better."

Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels
On 15-play drive that put ASU ahead late:
"I give all props to the offensive line for getting the run game going today. They did a phenomenal job. That was just the bread and butter, getting the run game going. It was keeping everybody in a rhythm and it showed on that drive by picking up first downs and critical third downs and eating up the clock. Our job was to go down and score and we did that and then the defense came out and got us the ball back. It was a phenomenal job in all phases."

On his scrambling today:
"It was just improvising and taking what the defense gives you but not try to do too much and cost us the game or get myself hurt. Cal did a great job, they overflowed to everything and so there were a couple cutback lanes on rollout plays. It was about stepping up in the pocket and getting what you could get."

On what was seen tonight compared to film in preparation:
"They have a lot of great effort and they're hustling to the ball. They were trying to limit the big plays and they did that for most of the game but we capitalized on our opportunities. We just converted and kept moving the chains."

Arizona State RB Eno Benjamin
On having success running against Cal's defense:
"I think we're growing as a unit, both offensively and defensively. We're just learning how to play with each other and I think we did a good job of that."

On the offensive line gaining consistency:
"Continuity goes a long way. We had some new pieces and we were working them in and I think we're starting to get comfortable with where we're at."

On his second and third effort to score touchdowns early:
"I think last week we attempted too many field goals and that was a big issue. We knew we needed to go score points. The line did a really good job of blocking up front."

On facing tough teams on the road:
"We're just growing and gaining continuity on the road and playing tough teams. We like being the underdog. We like playing on the road against tough teams. We believe in ourselves."

On the final drive:
"I was sitting on the sideline thinking there was no way we were going to allow this to happen. They didn't have their starting QB on the field and we had to take advantage of that. When we got back on the field I told (several people) we're going to win this game. Big players make big plays to win games."

Arizona State safety Aashari Croswell
On his interception in the first half:
"We were in coverage two and I read the quarterback's eyes and saw he was going to the fade and went up and made the play. I didn't think about bringing it out. It was about being smart."

On the defense, after giving up an early score:
"Like coach D (Defensive Coordinator Danny Gonzales) said, the team that plays the longest is going to win and we were playing real strong today at the end of the game. That's just us. We like it when it's hard. That's just us."

On the defense stepping up this week:
We weren't us in the Colorado game and Coach said we were a little soft and I agree with him. We just had to do us and I feel like that's what we did. Once we get started I don't feel like anybody can touch us."

Darien Butler, LB
On Cal's opening drive of the second half that produced a score:
"They were just trying to get us tired and running us sideline to sideline. I think they balanced it out with running and passing the ball. After that it was about playing sound. I feel like we were all on the same page."

On the ASU pass rush:
"We worked on that a lot in practice and coaches stressed that to us. You could that tonight that guys were getting tired of hearing that and we did something about it."
