BERKELEY - Making her first appearance of the 2019 season,
Katrina Carter scored to put California up, 1-0, at halftime against No. 7 Michigan, but the Wolverines tallied two second-half goals to escape Berkeley with a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon from Underhill Field.
Gabi Jimenez and
Megan Rodgers each registered two shots and
Natalie Dalton made five saves in goal for the Golden Bears, who fell to 1-2 on the year.Â
Head coach
Shellie Onstead was pleased with her team's performance. She emphasized that the Bears played much better today than they did on Monday against Northwestern.Â
"We can play with these ranked teams, we're just as good as they are," Onstead said. "It was a one-goal game and I would expect that at this level. I'm really happy with the difference between Monday and Sunday. We just couldn't settle things down in the second half. We got too ramped up into their frantic pace, and didn't get our feet under us to get the ball out of the back end. We have to be a little more calm in that moment. We stayed calm under pressure in the first half. We just need to maintain that in games like this and we'll be fine."
A defensive first quarter saw only one shot recorded by Michigan. Things opened up a bit in the second quarter with both teams creating more scoring chances. The Bears cashed in when Carter corralled a rebound off of a shot on goal by Jimenez and beat the Michigan goalie to her right.Â
The Wolverines brought more pressure in the second half, and maintained possession more in the second half than they did in the first. They tied the game eight minutes into the third quarter off of a long cross pass that was tipped past Dalton.Â
Michigan took the lead in the fourth quarter when Sarah Pyrtek collected a rebound off of a shot stopped by Dalton and found the back of the cage.Â
The Bears will next play the following six games on the road. They head to Iowa next weekend to face the Hawkeyes on Friday, Sept. 13, 1 p.m. PT followed by a neutral-site clash with Duke in Iowa on Saturday, Sept. 14, at noon PT.Â
