BERKELEY – The Battle of the Bay returns to Berkeley, as Cal and Stanford set to square off for the second time in a three-day span. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. PT Sunday evening at Haas Pavilion. The fifth-ranked Cardinal (14-1, 3-0 Pac-12) won the opener on Friday night at Maples Pavilion, handing the Golden Bears (8-6, 0-3 Pac-12), a 73-40 defeat.

The loss on the Farm marked the third consecutive defeat for the Golden Bears, who were held to season-lows in both total points (40) and field goal percentage (27.3 percent). Freshman guard Jazlen Green led Cal in scoring with nine points while Stanford's Haley Jones led all players with 17.

The series now heads to Haas Pavilion, where Cal has won the last two head-to-head matchups against the Cardinal. Cal's stretch of home success started with a 78-66 victory over No. 14 Stanford on February 17, 2018, and continued with a walk-off thriller last season. The Bears bounced the 8th-ranked Cardinal, 81-80, on January 31, 2019, when the layup by Cal senior Asha Thomas fell as time expired. Kristine Anigwe led the Bears with 25 points and 24 rebounds while Jaelyn Brown added 18 points, going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.

Brown, Cal's leading scorer this season at 14.8 points per game, and the Bears now look to make it three consecutive home wins against Stanford, a feat last accomplished since the mid-1980s.

Along with the on-court competition, Sunday's game also marks the official kickoff event of the year-long and campus-wide celebration of 150 years of Women at Berkeley. In October 1870, the UC Regents unanimously adopted a resolution allowing women to be admitted to the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout the 2020 calendar year, campus and Cal Athletics will be celebrating the women of Berkeley and the contributions they have made to the University and the world beyond. Chancellor Carol Christ, the first woman to hold the position at the University of California, Berkeley, will serve as an honorary coach for the game, while other key contributors to the athletic, campus, local, and state communities will be recognized during the game.

Historic in its own right, the series between Cal and Stanford in women's basketball dates back to April 4, 1896, when the schools squared off at San Francisco's Page Street Armory for the first intercollegiate women's basketball game. Stanford ultimately won the game, 2-1, in front of a crowd of several hundred all-female spectators.

SCOUTING THE CARDINAL
The Cardinal are in the midst of a four-game winning streak and look to improve to 4-0 in Pac-12 play before next weekend's trip to Oregon. Sunday's game in Berkeley marks the start of a three-game road stand for Stanford, who split its first two road games of the year.

The Cardinal topped USF, 97-71, on November 9, but fell to unranked Texas, 69-64, in Austin on December 22. Stanford went 7-2 on the road in Pac-12 play last season, with losses at Cal and at Utah.

Stanford has three players averaging double-figures this season, with Lexie Hull leading the charge at 12.8 points per game on the year. Junior guard Kiana Williams, who averaged 16.7 points per game in three meetings with the Bears last season, is second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game) while Jones, the No. 1 recruit in the nation coming out of high school, rounds out the scoring at 11.2 points per game.

Stanford ranks among the conference leaders in nearly every offensive category and is averaging 78.5 points per game on the season, the second-most by any team in the Pac-12. Defensively, the Carinal rank second in the Pac-12 limiting opponents to 32.7 percent shooting from the floor.

Head coach Tara Vanderveer is in her 34th season with the Cardinal and has 1,081 victories in her college coaching career, the most of any active women's coach in the nation. With Friday's win over the Bears, VanDerveer became the first women's basketball coach in NCAA history with 500 conference wins in a single league. Stanford was picked second in the Preseason Pac-12 Coaches Poll.

UP NEXT
Cal hits the road next weekend, playing its first games outside the state of California since the opening week of the season. The Bears face a pair of steep tests, taking on No. 3 Oregon State Friday night (7 p.m. PT) in Corvallis before a Sunday matchup (2 p.m. PT) against No. 2 Oregon.

Cal is 1-3 on the road this season and went 3-6 on the road last year in Pac-12 play. The Bears will be looking to flip the script in the series with the Beavers, who have won the last eight head-to-head meetings between the teams. Oregon State (15-0. 3-0 Pac-12) edged Cal, 82-74, last season in Berkeley and are currently one of only two unbeaten teams remaining in women's Division I basketball.
