BERKELEY – Senior
Paris Austin knocked down two free throws with 3.2 seconds on the clock, and a Cardinal layup at the other end was too late as California took down rival Stanford, 52-50, Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Austin led the Bears with 15 points and four assists, while sophomore
Matt Bradley added 14 points and five rebounds. Graduate senior
Kareem South tallied 13 points for California. Junior
Grant Anticevich brought down a team-high eight rebounds for the Bears. Â
California improves to 9-10 overall and 3-3 in Pac-12 play, while Stanford falls to 15-4 and 4-2 in conference action. Â
The Bears forced 15 Stanford turnovers, using tough defense throughout the game, holding the Cardinal to 44 percent shooting on the afternoon.
Summary: Cal took a timeout tied at 50 with 17.6 seconds left in the game, before Austin got fouled with 3.2 seconds on the clock. The senior knocked down two clutch free throws, giving the Bears their final advantage of the game. Â
The Bears made it a run of 11 straight of their own to take their first lead of the second half at 45-41. Bradley knocked down a 3-pointer and followed with a layup to tie the game at 41, forcing Stanford to call a timeout with 7:06 left in the game.
Cal made it a run of six straight on free throws from Bradley to cut the Cardinal lead to five at 39-34 with 10 minutes remaining in the game.
Stanford used a 12-2 extended run to take their biggest lead of the game at 39-28 with 11:41 left at the under-12 media timeout, before back-to-back buckets from Austin cut it to 39-32 with 10:13 to go. Â
Austin finished a reverse layup as time expired in the first half to make it 23-21 Stanford as the teams went to the locker room. South led the Bears with seven first-half points, while Austin added six.
The Bears went through a drought of more than three minutes at the offensive end, leading to a 14-13 Stanford lead at the 7:40 mark of the first.
Cal jumped out to an early 9-4 lead with 14:53 left in the first after a sequence featuring a thunderous slam from Austin and a deep 3-pointer by South.
