Bears Clipped By Cougs

Call Falls To Washington State, 92-66

PULLMAN, Wash. – Despite a career-high 18 points from Jazlen Green, the Cal women's basketball team fell to Washington State, 92-66, on Friday night at Beasley Coliseum. Green scored 15 of her points in the second half, but it was not enough for the Bears (8-12, 0-9  Pac-12) to hold off a key fourth-quarter surge by the Cougars (10-11, 3-6 Pac-12).

Washington State outscored Cal, 25-14, in the fourth quarter, keyed by a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach after Cal cut the deficit to 11 points after a three-pointer by redshirt senior Sara Anastasieska. Anastasieska added 11 points for the Bears while senior center CJ West had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds in her first game action since January 17.

Washington State's Borislava Hristova led all scorers with 32 points, going 14-for -18 from the floor. Senior guard Chanelle Molina added 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Cougars, who shot 58 percent (40-69) from the floor on the day.

With the loss, Cal falls to 1-6 on the road this season including an 0-4 mark away from home in Pac-12 play.

Looking to snap an eight-game losing streak, Cal got off to a strong start and connected on four of its first five attempts from the floor. However, Washington State was able to turn the tide by capitalizing on Cal miscues, turning 12 first half turnovers by the Bears into 16 points off turnovers.

The Cougars finished the game with 25 points off 19 Cal turnovers while also outscoring the Bears 62-22 in the paint.

Trailing 47-32 at the half, the Bears kept pace with the Cougars in the third quarter, buoyed by a strong performance off the bench from Green. The freshman from Upland California scored 10 of her 18 points in the third quarter and finished the game 4-for-8 from three-point range, tying her career-best for threes made in a game. The Bears shot 35 percent (8-23) as a team from three-point range, bouncing back from a 2-for-15 performance (13 percent) against Colorado their last time out.

The Bears slowly chipped away at the deficit in the early stages of the fourth quarter, but were held without a field goal for more than five minutes down the stretch as the Cougars put the game out of reach.

Cal looks to bounce back on Sunday, taking on Washington at 12 p.m. PT in Seattle. The Huskies (10-10, 2-7 Pac-12) won the first meeting between the teams, 67-64, in the conference opener at Haas Pavilion on January 3. Washington's Amber Melgoza led all scorers with 31 points while Jaelyn Brown and CJ West scored 12 points apiece for Cal. The Huskies are looking to respond after a 58-41 loss to No. 6 Stanford on Friday night.
